On July 15, 1976, in Chowchilla, California, a school bus carrying 26 children and driver Ed Ray was hijacked by three armed men. The captives were herded into vans with blacked-out windows and driven over 100 miles away, where they were forced into a buried truck and sealed inside with heavy batteries and a metal sheet. After 16 hours of sweltering heat, Ray and the oldest boy stacked mattresses and pushed their way to freedom. Frederick Newhall Woods, the mastermind, was paroled in 2022 after serving nearly 50 years in prison. In Uganda, a July 2026 field trip to Sipi Falls ended in tragedy when the school bus carrying students back to Kampala crashed, killing 23 children and the driver on impact, prompting the Ministry of Education to suspend all field trips nationwide. A 12-year-old Massachusetts student named Giver drowned on a summer program field trip while staff ignored warnings she couldn't swim, and a teacher who pulled her body from the water has since launched an initiative to stop youth drowning. And in 2002, a 65-year-old bus driver named Otto Nuss took 13 students, ages 7 to 15, on a 115-mile unauthorized field trip with a loaded rifle hidden behind his seat, telling them they were on a "wake-up call" mission to oppose Osama bin Laden. Students wrote "911" in reverse on fogged windows, but the bizarre odyssey ended when Nuss surrendered to a police officer in Maryland.
