Lovemore walks through every stage of his remarkable journey: discovering boxing at a copper mine gym after being thrown off a soccer field for fighting, going four times undefeated as a South African amateur champion while apartheid barred him from the Olympics, moving to Johannesburg and sleeping in a gym to launch his professional career, and eventually relocating to Australia in 1996 after feeling systematically denied opportunity because of his race. He recounts 69 professional fights, including his IBF World Super Lightweight title win, two bouts against Paul Malignaggi in the US and Manchester, and a gruelling contest against a young Canelo Alvarez in Mexico.
The episode also covers Lovemore's pursuit of education alongside a professional sporting career — studying law and communications between fights, carrying textbooks on planes, and ultimately earning degrees in law, communications, and more while still competing. He discusses founding a law practice specialising in family and criminal law, writing his book Tough Love, and his short-lived but serious entry into South African politics as founder of the party BAPSAB (Building a Better South Africa).
The second segment is a biographical tribute to Cedric Kushner — the Cape Town-born boxing promoter who stowed away to Europe, entered the USA as an illegal immigrant, built a music promotion empire promoting acts including Fleetwood Mac, the Rolling Stones, and Tom Jones at Carnegie Hall, and then reinvented himself as one of boxing's most powerful promoters. Host Robin Welch, who knew Kushner personally, recounts his rise from a monopoly conviction that ended his music career to promoting more than 53 boxing tournaments a year across multiple continents, staging the Lennox Lewis vs. Hasim Rahman fight at Carnival City, and his final years of declining health before his death on 25 July 2015.
