It's about nine at night. Everyone's sorted, or at least not needing you. On the sofa with your phone, not really reading anything, just moving your thumb, round and round. Forty minutes go past. When you drag yourself to bed, here's the strange part. You don't feel rested, you feel worse, flat, hollow, like you spent something and got nothing back. Tomorrow you'll call that lazy. It's none of those.

Today I want to show you why you do it, and what your tired evening was actually asking for instead. Welcome to The Dignity Room, the podcast for the woman who quietly holds it all together. This is the last of a few weeks on how you carry too much and get seen too little, and it turns a corner.

There's a list in your head, of who and what needs looking after, running all day. Your name is on it, right at the bottom, after everyone. The deal you've made, the one you'd never say out loud, is: I'll get to me when the rest is done. Except the rest is never done, so your name never comes up. And here's what that does over time: you forget what you like. Somebody asks what you'd do with a free afternoon, entirely your own, and you go blank, that part of you has been quiet so long. Your own page is nearly blank.

Why does the scroll leave you emptier? There's a tiredness that has nothing to do with your body, it's your attention, a state called directed attention fatigue. Researchers Stephen and Rachel Kaplan found that attention recovers when something holds it gently, what they called soft fascination. The phone doesn't let you stop steering. Every swipe is a tiny decision, made with the exact muscle already on the floor. You sat down to rest, and handed it hundreds more decisions. The scroll isn't rest. It's just tired with the lights off.

So why do you keep doing it? Because the phone is the one thing that asks nothing of you. Real rest takes a bit of something to begin, a book needs you to follow it. At nine at night, you have none of that left. It's not weakness, it's the only door your tank can open. But that's not rest, that's collapse. Collapse stops the bleeding, it doesn't put anything back. Rest does. This isn't only tiredness, it's depletion.

Here's the corner we turn tonight. You've treated rest as a reward, and since everything else is never done, you never qualify. Rest isn't a reward for finishing. It's what makes you able to carry any of it at all. You rest for the same reason you charge your phone, not as a treat, but because it stops working otherwise. You're the thing the whole house runs on, so your rest is maintenance, not luxury. Putting yourself on your own list isn't selfish. It's the least selfish thing you could do, because everyone here is standing on you.

Three things to take with you. Understand: the scroll isn't rest, it's collapse. Keep this: rest isn't a reward for finishing, it's the thing that lets you carry any of it at all. Notice this week: check how you feel getting up from the sofa, did that put something back, or just stop the day. Try one small thing: ten minutes of rest that actually puts something back, not the phone, a hot drink and a window. Those minutes go above someone on the list, not at the bottom, they'll never happen there. If the guilt is enormous, that's you finding out how deep the rule goes. Outlast it once.

This is for the woman on for everyone all day, with nothing left by evening. Your rest isn't a luxury, it's the maintenance the whole house depends on.

That's the recognition weeks done. But your ten minutes, and the guilt when you try, that's personal, and it's exactly what the women in the Dignity Queens work through together. Come in here: https://www.dignityroom.com/dignityqueens. Whenever you're ready.

You were never lost. No one ever showed you the way. Until now. This is The Dignity Room. I'll see you next Tuesday.
