Picture a good evening. Everyone's home, nothing's gone wrong. The people you love are all under one roof, doing their own thing. It's the exact evening you'd have wished for, years ago, when the kids were small. And there's a sentence in you that you would never say out loud. I feel completely alone. And the second it arrives, you're ashamed of it. So you push it down, because who would believe you.
It makes complete sense. Welcome to The Dignity Room, the podcast for the woman who quietly holds it all together. If you've tried saying this out loud, you've probably heard but you've got a lovely family, or a hurt what do you mean alone, I'm right here. Both shut the door. Today, I believe you.
This loneliness isn't about being on your own. You get plenty of that, and it's not this. It's telling someone about your day and watching them half hear it. You wrap it up early: oh, nothing, just work, fine. It's giving the summary version of yourself, because the real one doesn't have anywhere to go. That's the loneliness. Not the absence of people, the absence of being met.
We're taught loneliness is about numbers, so the cure is more company. But that can't explain you, you have the people. Loneliness is about whether anyone is meeting what's actually happening inside you. There's the empty room kind, and more company genuinely helps. And the full room kind, plenty of people, none reaching the inside of you, where more company does nothing, and can even make it worse. You don't have a shortage of people. You have a shortage of being met.
How does a loving home produce this. Three things stack up, none of them anybody being unkind. Roles: everyone slots into a function, yours is the biggest, so nobody asks the manager of everything how she really is. The closed door from last week: holding yourself shut is quietly felt by everyone too. And the summary: giving the short version trains the house that the short version is all there is. Together they build a lonely room inside a loving house.
I want to be careful here, because this could send you to bed convinced your relationship is broken. That is not what I'm saying. Two things are true at once. You love your people and they love you. And you are lonely in the middle of them. Both, together, and neither cancels the other out. It's the normal result of years of roles, a closed door, and a hundred summaries, and it says nothing about whether you chose the right person. This isn't a problem with your family. It's a problem with how much of you has had anywhere to go, and that's workable, because it doesn't need anyone else to change first.
Three things to take with you. Understand: loneliness isn't a headcount, it's being witnessed. Yours is the full room kind, why the usual advice never worked. Keep this: you don't have a shortage of people, you have a shortage of being met. Notice this week: catch yourself giving the summary, and clock it, oh, there's the summary again. Try one small thing: one unsummarised sentence, to one safe person, once this week, not your partner necessarily. The point isn't that they respond perfectly, it's that for one moment, the real version of you was in the room. If it won't come out, try again next week.
This is for the woman who can be surrounded by the people she loves and still feel completely alone. You have a shortage of being met, not people.
I can tell you that you deserve to be witnessed. I can't witness you through a speaker. That's the whole reason the Dignity Queens exists, a room of women who all know the full room kind of lonely, saying their unsummarised sentences to each other and being met. Come in here: https://www.dignityroom.com/dignityqueens. No rush.
You were never lost. No one ever showed you the way. Until now. This is The Dignity Room. I'll see you next Tuesday.
