The Bengals’ decision to bring back Mitch Tinsley and move on from Ke’Shawn Williams is a relatively small roster move that nevertheless says plenty about Cincinnati’s priorities after Sunday’s loss to Pittsburgh.

Cincinnati is re-signing Tinsley off the Houston Texans’ practice squad and adding him to the active roster, giving the Bengals a familiar player at a position that has suddenly become thin. Rookie Colbie Young is dealing with a knee injury, while Andrei Iosivas remains on injured reserve with a thumb injury. Tinsley spent last season with Cincinnati and caught eight passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns, so he already knows the offense and has experience with Joe Burrow and Joe Flacco.
The corresponding move is the release of Williams, who was elevated into a bigger role against Pittsburgh after being inactive during Cincinnati’s first two games. Williams’ most consequential moment came on special teams, when he muffed a punt that Pittsburgh recovered. NFL statistics credit him with one lost fumble in the game.
The move is particularly notable because Williams had only recently won his roster spot. Cincinnati chose him over Charlie Jones at final cuts and identified him as one of the team’s primary return options. He had also made an impression during the preseason, including a touchdown catch in the finale against Philadelphia.
Tinsley, meanwhile, was one of the players Cincinnati chose to waive at the end of August, with Dohnte Meyers and Young ultimately making the roster ahead of him. Now the Bengals are reversing that decision less than a month later.
The timing inevitably connects the move to Sunday's special-teams problems, but the larger issue is depth. Cincinnati needs another receiver who can step in quickly, and Tinsley offers familiarity at a time when the room has taken several hits. For Williams, one mistake in his first meaningful regular-season opportunity has resulted in a remarkably quick change in circumstances.
