Staying One Step Ahead: Part 3 of 5
Your child cries at drop-off. Says nobody played with them. Forgets the homework folder on day three. Comes home exhausted, irritable, or completely falls apart over the wrong water bottle.
And suddenly your parent brain is asking:
Is this normal? Should I be worried? Is this already becoming a pattern?
In Part 3 of the Staying One Step Ahead back-to-school series, Dr. Amy Patenaude explains why the first weeks of school can be noisy and how to tell the difference between a hard adjustment moment and something that deserves closer attention.
Because a hard day is a data point. It is not automatically a pattern.
In this episode, you'll learn:- What commonly changes during the first weeks of school
- Why "normal adjustment" does not mean ignoring concerns
- How to watch the trajectory instead of one snapshot
- Why kids may look fine at school and fall apart at home
- How to gather information without interrogating your child at pickup
- When a pattern deserves closer attention
When something new shows up, ask four questions:
- Baseline: Is this new for my child?
- Pattern: How often, how intense, and how widespread is it?
- Recovery: Can my child settle, reconnect, sleep, eat, play, and return to themselves?
- Direction: Is this improving, staying stuck, or getting worse?
That last one matters.
A snapshot tells you what happened.
A trajectory tells you whether your child is finding their footing.
🌱 Tiny WinChoose ONE thing to watch this week:
Drop-off.
After-school recovery.
Sleep.
Friendships.
Assignment tracking.
When something happens, jot down four things:
What happened?
What came before it?
How long did it last?
What helped recovery?
No spreadsheet required.
And instead of asking, "How was your day?" try:
"What was one easy part and one hard part?"
Then give the answer some room to arrive.

In Part 4, we're going underneath the behavior to talk about why kids struggle when school starts, including fatigue, meltdowns, worry, resistance, perfectionism, and shutdown.
Because knowing something can be adjustment is helpful.
Understanding why your child is struggling is even more useful.
For now: don't predict the year from one Tuesday. Notice the next data point.
