🔋 #USLithium Breakthrough: Turning Oilfield Wastewater Into Battery Materials

Could wastewater from Texas oilfields help strengthen America’s lithium supply chain? Element3 has brought ORNL-developed lithium recovery technology into commercial operation in the Permian Basin, connecting scientific innovation with domestic production of a critical battery material.

🧪 Meet the Scientists Behind the Innovation

Parans Paranthaman and Jayanthi Kumar are among the Oak Ridge National Laboratory researchers contributing to lithium recovery technologies. Working with a wider scientific team, their research helps address a difficult challenge: selectively separating valuable lithium from brines containing many other elements.

🏭 From National Laboratory to Commercial Production

Element3 licensed lithium recovery technologies developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, with early research supported by the DOE’s Critical Materials Innovation Hub, led by Ames National Laboratory.

The company’s Midland, Texas, operation recovers lithium from produced water—the wastewater associated with oil and gas extraction—and converts recovered lithium chloride into battery-grade lithium carbonate.

♻️ A New Resource From an Existing Waste Stream

This approach could expand lithium supplies by recovering useful materials from water already generated by industrial activity. Its long-term value will depend on reliable production, competitive costs, and responsible management of water, chemicals, and remaining waste.

🔋 Why Lithium Matters

Lithium is essential to lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles, smartphones, laptops, and many energy-storage systems. Increasing domestic supplies could support American battery manufacturing and reduce exposure to international supply disruptions.

⚡ From Texas Oilfields to Battery Supply Chains

Oilfield Produced Water → Lithium Recovery → Lithium Carbonate → Battery Materials

The project demonstrates how technology transfer can connect national laboratory discoveries with industrial production. However, extraction is only one part of the supply chain: refining, battery manufacturing, and recycling capacity also matter.

📈 Why This Breakthrough Matters

Can lithium recovered from oilfield wastewater become a significant source of American battery materials? Watch to discover how Element3, ORNL, Parans Paranthaman, and Jayanthi Kumar are contributing to the next chapter of the U.S. lithium supply chain.
