Halloween gets noisy with pumpkins and party bags, but the older story is quieter and stranger. We’re talking Samhain, the Gaelic marker of winter, when folklore says the boundary between worlds feels thinner and the night air carries different kinds of meaning. We also trace the real origin of the Jack O’Lantern back to Ireland and Stingy Jack, a hollowed-out turnip, and a warning light for a man who could not find a home in either heaven or hell.
From there, we move from myth to memory. We share the moments from childhood and beyond that still refuse to sit neatly in a rational box: a figure appearing through wallpaper, a woman seen in a ruined tower that is blocked off, shapes at the end of the bed, and the uneasy feeling of not being alone in a dark corridor. We’re not here to convert anyone. We’re here to tell the truth of what we experienced, ask better questions, and hold space for scepticism without sliding into cynicism.
Things get even more intriguing when the stories turn physical: objects moving, items flying, and events that seem to involve more than one witness. To help make sense of how people report these experiences, we break down the “clairs” in plain language, including clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, and claircognisance, plus the lesser-known sensory oddities like unexplained smells. We also compare personal experience with paranormal books and horror films, and why the jump factor often feels more realistic than gore.
