It is May’s birthday. Her father gives her a big, brown box. "Open it!" says her father. May opens the box. Inside, there is a brand new violin. It is shiny and beautiful. It is not small; it is the perfect size.

May is very excited. She picks up the new violin and plays a song. The music is wonderful. "Thank you, Dad!" May says. She practices her new violin all afternoon. She wants to be a great musician.

His mom asks, "Do you want an apple, too?" Sam shakes his head. "No thank you," he says. "I don't like apples. I only want big food!" Sam eats his hamburger very fast. Munch, munch, munch. Now, Sam is not hungry. He is happy and ready to play more basketball.

Leo is very good at dribbling the ball. He is fast, and he can jump high. But Leo has a problem. He is not very good at shooting. When he tries to throw the ball into the hoop, it usually hits the rim and falls down. Clang!

One Saturday, Leo’s team has a big game. In the last minute, the score is 20 to 20. It is a tie! Leo’s friend passes him the ball. Leo feels nervous. His heart goes thump-thump, thump-thump. He looks at the hoop. He breathes in, and he shoots.

The ball flies through the air... and swish! It goes in! Leo’s team wins. Leo is so happy. He realizes that practice makes perfect.
