Opening question: What is the connection between the sequence of verses in the parasha? Likkuti Torah P. This day the Lord your God commands you to do these statutes and judgments, and you shall keep and do them with all your heart and with all your soul. You have declared today that you will be your God, and that you will walk in His ways, and keep His statutes, His commandments, and His ordinances, and listen to His voice. And the Lord has declared today that you will be His special people, as He has spoken to you, and that you will keep all His commandments.’ (Deuteronomy 26:16–18). The reason the verse closes with ‘this day’ without explaining which day is being referred to is because it refers to the well-known day that is explained at the end of the Parashah of the Bringing of the Firstfruits in our Parashahs: ‘Look down from Your holy dwelling place from heaven and bless Your people Israel and the land that You have given us, a land flowing with milk and honey,’ which is actually the day of entry into the Land of Israel. And the Holy Zohar takes the last word in the verse ‘and honey’ and connects it with the first words of the next verse ‘this day is the Lord’, thus producing the ראת of the Shem Hoi’. And we need to understand the connection between ‘and honey’ and ‘this day is the Lord’. It is precisely through the Oral Torah that we come to love the Lord! And the explanation is: Here the people of Israel were called by the name of Adam, as it is said, "And you were my sheep, I pastured you, man," etc. (Ezekiel 34:3), and this is connected with the written Torah, which is also in contrast to the living Adam, as it is said (Ezekiel 1:25), "And upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness of a man upon it from above." And the Land of Israel is called by the name that "desired to do the will of the Buyer," which was done precisely by the Oral Torah. Therefore, it is called the land flowing with milk and honey to allude to two things: 1. A descent into dealing with material things and raising the sparks to holiness. 2. Honey and milk allude to the sweetness of the Torah that comes through knowing the secrets of the Torah. And it is impossible to know the flavors and secrets of the Torah without the Oral Torah. Therefore, before Rosh Hashanah, when the covenant between God and the children of Israel is made, we read in our parashahs the first fruits of the first fruits and the rest of the verses that create the initials of the name of God, to suggest that an inner connection to God comes precisely through oral Torah study. Love awakens precisely when one is far away! There is a parable about how sometimes a person feels distance from his father precisely when he is with him for a long time in close proximity, because when they are together for a long time, one does not feel love openly, but rather it is hidden in the details of life. And the advice for this is to create some distance so that through it the feeling of distance and thirst will awaken and love will burst forth. Thus, in preparation for the High Holidays, a Jew should observe that he is supposedly far from God. He should not feel that this observation will cause him to despair and move further away, because in each of us there is a hidden natural love that "will never waver, and we only need to discover it." It is forbidden to panic about falling! An example of this can be taken from what the prophet Jeremiah said to the Israelites, "Remove the foreskin of your heart and turn to Him." That is, he taught the people that a person's heart should not be deceived by seeing that the externality of his heart is connected to the materiality of the world, and in that case he would say to himself, "We are cut off, our hopes are lost," but rather remove the foreskin of your heart. That the feeling of distance is only intended to inspire a person to strive and awaken his heart to God and to reveal his natural love more intensely. And this is what the scripture concludes with, "To praise and to name and to glory," where the word glory alludes to the light, "They shone on his head" (Job 29:3) and like a halo. That through this contemplation, the light of the soul will be awakened more intensely.
