批評家のレビュー

[Praise for Wolf Hall] "Dizzyingly, dazzlingly good... Hugely exciting, packed full of power struggles and political machinations, but also delightfully poetic, vivid in image and phrase. A rich and subtle wonder." (Daily Mail

[Praise for Bring Up the Bodies] "The greatest modern English prose writer writing today." (Peter Stothard, Chairman of the 2012 Man Booker Prize)

あらすじ・解説

All three entries in Hilary Mantel's award-winning Wolf Hall Trilogy, brought together for the first time in audio.

In Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall trilogy, one of our very best writers brings the opulent world of the Tudors to bloody, glittering life. It is the backdrop to the rise and rise of Thomas Cromwell: lowborn boy, charmer, bully, master of deadly intrigue, and, finally, most powerful of Henry VIII's courtiers. But the bloody theatre of Cromwell's ascension will leave no one unscathed.

This collection includes expertly adapted versions of Wolf Hall, Bring up the Bodies and The Mirror and the Light alongside The World of Wolf Hall, a listening guide which explores the key themes and historical context of the novels, and offers listening group questions to discuss.

Read by Dan Stevens, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Joseph Kloska, and Anna Bentinck.

A Tudor Treat!

I groaned when I realised that there were to be not one but three readers of the exquisitely written series Surely no one could maintain the drama, characterisation and clarity of the superb Volume One; I was wrong. All three books are superbly read; I was immersed in the times and, towards the end, hoping against my better knowledge that Henry would save his servant, Thomas.

One caveat only. Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury is consistently MISPRONOUNCED as CRAM-NER! Once you’ve heard it it irritates like a stone in the shoe. Could it be retrospectively edited?

This minor fault aside a superb tour de force!

All 3 books ARE here!!

The first 6 chapters are a reader’s guide, but because they haven’t made this clear in the chapter numbers, it’s hard to navigate to the first chapter of Wolf Hall. The books start at chapter 7!

Amazon, PLEASE update the chapter names so that they reflect the different sections and books. Thanks all!!

Ignore complaints

Other reviewers don’t seem to have realised that the *first* section is the reading guide...then you have a well-adapted, three book performance 😂

Beautifully read and a joy to listen to

In common with the rest of the country I’ve been at home for over a month. I have two toddlers to entertain and love being able to put on an audio book to escape into for a while. This wonderful trilogy provided hours of blissful relief. The narrators are all excellent, as is the writing. I’ve listened every day for days and days... the only problem being I’ve started speaking like a 16th Century Duke. I wager my husband will crack up if I don’t desist.

Misleading - thought I was purchasing the trilogy rather a than a listening guide and abridged versions. annoying waste of a credit.

Amazing audio. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Big fan of Hilary Mantel, I was not disappointed by the audio reading of the books, I felt entranced listening to the story as if I was in the story.

Saved my sanity

This audiobook helped get me through a few awful days of the coronavirus.
One day I’ll read it properly but for now, it helped make a nightmarish time a wee bit easier

Excellent adaptation INCLUDING all 3 Books

This includes all 3 books AND a readers guide, I think some people didn`t get past the first few chapters.

Excellent

I loved it. To serve a spoilt king, poor "Cremwell". I bet this story is very near to the truth.

voiced unclearly

Julian Rhind-Tutt was particularly difficult to hear - he had top notes and bottom but no middle and i couldn’t hear the bottom unless the volume was too loud for the top
Joseph Kloska is too soft overall. Anna Bentinck was terrific in the opening essay - and Dan Stephens must’ve been good because the story remains with me rather than the annoyance of not being able to be inside the tale.
The stand alone Mirror and the Light is much better - as per the stand alone Bring up the bodies

Not finished.

24 chapters in one day. Enthralling, amusing, engrossing. Such a good story to pass the time and narrated expertly.

Nobody mentioned it's abridged

I loved listening to this trilogy so imagine my pleasure at learning it was abridged! I now have 60 or so more hours of Cromwell to listen to.

Rich, intriguing - a privilege to listen

There’s very little to add to the literary reviews of this extraordinary trilogy. Despite some confusion of who, where, what in Wolf Hall by The Mirror & the Light the tapestry of Thomas Cromwell’s mastery of & downfall in Henry’s court is rich, detailed, intriguing & moving. The politicking & manipulation unfolds at a fair pace, particularly toward the end. Having lived through Cromwells eyes for so long I felt his loss keenly.

The narrators are outstanding - particularly Julian Rhind Tutt. His naturalness, clarity, extraordinary range of character communicated through flawless accents & expression were an absolute treat. He made Bring up the Bodies hugely entertaining & it did take some time to get used to Joseph Kloska’s less sure (in comparison), slightly affected vocal characteristics in the final book. (I’m subsequently listening to all I can narrated by JRT to extend this pleasure as far as I can). Nevertheless this trilogy was an extraordinary listen - I loved every second.

Love the Cromb!

A feast, a banquet, piled high with all the delicious trimmings of the Tudor reign! Love, honor, dishonor, secrets, betrayal, brutality, sacrifice, cruelty, greed, sins and sinners in royal robes! brilliantly performed, I devoured it to the bitter end! 👌🏼

Will be amoung the great books of the century!

The Wolf Hall trilogy is a stunning achievement by writer Hilary Mantel. It's thoroughly engaging, delves deep into the hearts of its characters, plants you knee-deep in history and the mores of the times, and does all this at a cracking pace. Over the three books it never flags for an instant. This is writing and storytelling at its best. And each of the narrators were equally up to the task.
