あらすじ・解説

Joan Morgan offers a provocative and powerful look into the life of the modern Black woman: a complex world in which feminists often have not-so-clandestine affairs with the most sexist of men, where women who treasure their independence frequently prefer men who pick up the tab, where the deluge of babymothers and babyfathers reminds Black women who long for marriage that traditional nuclear families are a reality for less than 40 percent of the population, and where Black women are forced to make sense of a world where truth is no longer black and white but subtle, intriguing shades of gray.

Still fresh, funny, and irreverent, When Chickenheads Come Home to Roost gives voice to the most intimate thoughts of the post-civil rights, post-feminist, post-soul generation.

Amazing

At the age of 39 I discovered this book that spoke to me on so many levels!! How did I never hear of this book before now?!! I never thought of labeling myself as a feminist, but I heard myself described, and I saw my struggle to not constantly be a trope reflected in multiple ways!!! Timing is everything though, and I'm also very glad I discovered this book after the additions of 2016 & 2017- that Afterword was 👌🏽

For those with the courage to think

I was both offended and fell in love with this book. Definitely the best audible I've ever heard - so we'll done ladies. Replayed the beginning of Chapter six a few times.

Required reading for every black girl and woman.

Finally, someone gives simple language to the complicated relationship between the black woman & the black man.

One of my favorite books!

Growing up in the hood, there's a deep knowledge to this book that I'll always come back too. And yes I still like Hip Hop!

I will be reading again

this was an amazing book. there were so many points of reference I have to return back to for future discussions. I will be recommending to all my fly girls and friends that love hip hop and are indeed black feminists!

Chickenheads is One Woman’s Bitter Tale!

The author made great points on Black women feminism that I vibed with. The later chapters devolved into a bitter, judgmental rant about the lives of women the author had no true insight to that she identified as “chickenheads.”

While, I don’t make excuses for life decisions that grown people make. There is also an understanding that I can judge an individual’s life decisions, because more often than not I have no information on the options they had available at the time when they made their life choices.

I wanted to like this book more, but just found it hard to get past the author’s rage at women who were surviving and make do, because for many they don’t have the resources or support circle to make a change.

exceptional conversation

Joy Bryant is a treat. Her narration was perfect. Joan's writing was like sitting in a room full of friends discussing hip hop and feminist culture now, then and in the future. Not a guide, so you the reader are involved. Excellent.

Must Read!!

This book was a chronicling of a journey through black and feminist womanhood! Worthy of reading and studying. A great start point to better accepting yourself regardless of how you classify yourself. I am a fan!
