The river takes. The river gives. This valley’s story begins here.
The river shaped their past—now it threatens their future.
For as long as folks could remember, the Holston River had its own mind—rising in the dead of night, swallowing fields, and testing the backbone of every family along its banks. The Carters have weathered those waters for generations. They endured washed-out crops, ruined homes, and nights spent praying for loved ones the waters took. Through it all, one truth remained steady as the river’s current: Grandma Susie Carter always found a way to keep her family standing.
Now, as the Tennessee Valley Authority arrives with promises to tame the river once and for all, Susie faces a threat unlike any she’s known. This flood isn’t made of water. It’s made of government papers, survey stakes, and the quiet certainty that progress will swallow the valley she’s fought to protect. But Susie isn’t standing alone. Her granddaughter, Rose, is coming of age in a valley on the brink of change—quietly gathering the strength she’ll need for the battles ahead.
What the River Took follows Susie, her son William, and young Rose as the TVA’s plans tighten around their land. Susie must confront what can be saved, what must be surrendered, and what the river has already taken. Her grit, faith, and fierce devotion become the anchor for a community caught between memory and modernity—a valley on the edge of change and a woman determined that progress will not wash away the heart of her family.
The river has taken much from the Carters—but it has never taken their resolve. And when the waters settle, Book Two—What the River Gave—will reveal what strength and grace remain when a valley is forced to begin again.
