North America was settled by people with distinct religious, political, and ethnographic characteristics, creating regional cultures that have been at odds with one another ever since. Subsequent immigrants didn't confront or assimilate into an "American" or "Canadian" culture, but rather into one of the 11 distinct regional ones that spread over the continent each staking out mutually exclusive territory. In American Nations, Colin Woodard leads us on a journey through the history of our fractured continent....

ストーリー
David Epstein examined the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors, forecasters, and scientists. He discovered that in most fields - especially those that are complex and unpredictable - generalists, not specialists, are primed to excel. Generalists often find their path late, and they juggle many interests rather than focusing on one. They’re also more creative, more agile, and able to make connections their more specialized peers can’t see.

The world's most entertaining and useless self-help guide, from the brilliant mind behind the wildly popular webcomic xkcd and the million-selling What If? and Thing Explainer. For any task you might want to do, there's a right way, a wrong way and a way so monumentally bad that no one would ever try it. How To is a guide to the third kind of approach. It's full of highly impractical advice for everything from landing a plane to digging a hole.

If you follow the headlines, the world in the 21st century appears to be sinking into chaos, hatred and irrationality. Yet, as Steven Pinker shows, if you follow the trendlines, you discover that our lives have become longer, healthier, safer and more prosperous - not just in the West but worldwide. Such progress is no accident: it's the gift of a coherent value system that many of us embrace without even realising it. These are the values of the Enlightenment: of reason, science, humanism and progress.

mistitled - middle class guide to English classes
Somewhat funny, and genuinely interesting at points but less of a guide to Englishness as a national identity and more an antiquated guide to Middle class perceptions of the English class system. More specifically an anecdotal view of English class from the perspective of a semi-autistic highly educated, proud middle class woman with some outdated prejudices for contemporary audiences. I found it a bit dull when I thought it ironic and satirical but found it much funnier when I realised it was written seriously, if a little tongue in cheek, after a quick Google of the author.

Awful narration
I’d read the book before and thought it reasonably entertaining so got the audiobook to listen while driving. I’m glad I did it that way round as I would not have been able to read the book with the memory of the narrator’s insufferably arch and patronising tone. Just awful. I simply cannot get past the first 30 minutes and 20 minutes of that has been through gritted teeth.
