Three hundred years ago, a professor of rhetoric in Naples proposed a criterion of truth that his century could not bring itself to hear. We know for certain only what we have made. Everything else we merely observe, and observation, he warned, is a poorer kind of knowing than we like to pretend. Giambattista Vico called the principle verum factum, the true is the made, and then spent the rest of his life following it into the strangest corners of human experience.

This book takes his principle seriously and pushes it further than he dared. If perception itself is something the mind constructs rather than receives, then the world we live in was made by us after all, not the institutions alone but the very sights and sounds of an ordinary afternoon. Vico believed that making a thing gave us privileged knowledge of it. The uncomfortable discovery of the modern mind is that it does not. We do not inspect our own creations directly; we build a second model in order to know the first, and a third to know ourselves. Even the self we introspect is a rumor we have composed and half believe.

VERUM FACTUM traces a single idea from Descartes's confidence through Vico's rebellion, through the science of the predicting brain, through the cycles by which civilizations forget what they built, to a conclusion neither triumphant nor despairing. We inhabit a world we constructed and do not command. And the sign of an honest science, in cosmology as much as in the study of the mind, is that it says so out loud, and marks carefully the difference between what it has measured, what it has merely declared, and what it has truly earned.

For listeners who want to understand knowledge, perception, history, and themselves without a single equation, this is a book about the limits of looking, and about the maturity that begins when we accept them.
