Versions of a Murder takes the idea of restarting at the same moment in time over and over, and spins it into a compelling suspense novel about a young woman who tries to catch a serial killer across numerous lifetimes.

What if you had to relive the day of your murder over and over?

Opening on one ordinary morning in 1974, junior doctor Heidi Quick awakens from a quick nap to find herself rushing about her day on a busy hospital ward. When a snowstorm closes in, she accepts a ride home from her senior colleague Dr Fred Preston, only for her night to turn shockingly fatal when Preston murders her in her apartment. Even more shocking is when Heidi wakes and relives that day again.

Heidi becomes locked in a time loop—one that resets not with the sunrise, but with her death. Each time she dies, she wakes again in 1974, memories intact, and haunted by a single unchanging truth: someone she trusts wants her dead. But that someone is a respected colleague, Fred Preston, whose charm and authority mask a darkness rooted in a real-life UK serial killer case.

The repercussions of this reverberate through the following years as Heidi relives versions of her life—sometimes days, sometimes decades—as well as versions of her murder. Soon, Heidi realizes that due to a twist of time and fate, she has a singular chance to both work out why she is being murdered and also determine how she can save future victims and lead a meaningful life. With each iteration, the lines between destiny and choice, victim and perpetrator, past and future blur, as Heidi tries to stop Preston once and for all.

Versions of a Murder is an utterly page-turning, inventive, absorbing and often moving novel, part gripping suspense, part quest for survival and justice, that considers the choices we make in life while also drawing out a cat and mouse story, as we root for Heidi from the start—and again and again and again.

批評家のレビュー

“Phenomenal! From its explosive start to the many and varied twisted turns through a diabolical time loop, Daly creates a psychological thriller like no other. Can you escape your own murder? Stay tuned to find out!”—Lisa Gardner

“Paula Daly is back! A woman relives the same day, over and over in a hospital as she aims to prevent a Harold Shipman-type murderer. I can't stop thinking about this novel. I loved it!”—Gillian McAllister

“I picked up Versions of a Murder and didn’t put it down until I finished it. It gripped me completely. The book’s plotting is masterful. It’s the rare page-turner that also has something deep to say—about women’s lives and what we do with the only choices we believe we’re allowed to make. I was wildly entertained by this book and genuinely moved. It’s outstanding.”—Attica Locke, New York Times bestselling author of Guide Me Home

“Paula Daly’s skillfully-executed novel hooks you in with a compelling and original premise that leaves your heart racing. Daly creates an undercurrent of anxiety and tension that pulses through every page, making it hard to look away. “I ripped through this with great pleasure . . . superbly evocative of its periods, and hugely effective in conveying the limited options and freedoms open to its heroine in a novel that is very much about making choices and living with the consequences.”—Chris Brookmyre, author of The Cliff House

“Once I started reading, I just couldn’t stop. Intricate and intriguing, I was gripped throughout. Loved it!”—Jill Mansell, bestselling author of Just One Look at You

Versions of a Murder by Paula Daly is a gripping tale where all might not be what it seems. We start in Groundhog Day meets grisly outcome territory, but the story soon becomes more complex. We follow Heidi, a hard-working and permanently tired junior doctor in Yorkshire through various versions of her life as she gradually feels impelled to return to face a person she’s sure will become a serial killer. But just how reliable is she? How much of what is happening is ‘real’? Daly keeps us guessing as she takes the reader on a journey stretching over several decades until a final satisfying denouement is reached.”—Anna Maloney, author of The 10:12
