あらすじ・解説

At age 11, Alex Sinclair pledges an oath to the Duke of Chatham promising to serve and protect his illegitimate daughter, Lucy FitzHarris. Nine years later, the duke unexpectedly takes Alex up on his vow, offering the future Laird of Balforss his daughter's hand in marriage.

Now a man, hotheaded Alex has difficulty convincing Lucy - who would rather starve to death than marry a vulgar Scot - to go through with the arranged marriage. Once Lucy arrives in Scotland, she cannot resist the magic of Balforss or the allure of her handsome Highland warrior.

But when Alex seemingly betrays Lucy right before their wedding, she is tricked into running away. Alex must rein in his temper to rescue his lady from unforeseen danger and Lucy must swallow her pride if she hopes to wed the Highlander she has come to love.

I RARELY Give More Then 4 Stars🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇

I'm new to this Author and was hesitant to choose this book based on Luke warm reviews. I've come to the conclusion that the 5 star rating isn't an accurate representation of the worthiness of a book. There are as many personal preferences on what readers view as a good book, as their are readers. I generally don't rate more than 3 stars., to me, this indicates an okay book. I found the Author of this book to be very well crafted in writing. Her STYLE of writing wasn't so simple as to make me wonder if her book was intended for juveniles. Her characters were flawed, yet still likeable, something that always makes a book more meaningful. Her supporting characters are believable to the point I'm interested to know what happens to them in the future, yet she doesn't distract from the main story by dwelling too much on them. Her story and plot are different....starting out with the 2 main characters meeting briefly as children...Then their is a beloved pet owned by the female character which, as a pet owner, tugged at my heart strings. The author also included some interesting historical tid bits that added to the richness of the time period. Such as honey and candle making...bow and arrow...and sayings common to the SCOT people. This book was good. Better than average and I've read at least 100 to 200 historical romances in my life. It had the perfect balance of everything on my personal list of preferences. Not too simple/flat. Not too nasty, but romantic and sweet with the sex scenes appropriately hot. Plot that moved along quickly. And a good theme.

Terrible narrator

The story is juvenile and barely entertaining. The narrator makes it worse. The inflection in her voice never changes in relation to what is happening in the story. Every sentence sounds the same. I listened to only half of this book bc I just couldn’t keep putting up such an awful narrator.

It was free...

I just finished one of the Outlander books and felt I needed some more Scots in my life. This seemed like a decent story, although nowhere near Outlander caliber.
But the narration was fairly annoying, and the characters, omg! The characters! I felt perverted listening to them because they are 18 and 20 years old. Children, really. The heroine was particularly annoying. Constantly thinking the wrong thing and acting impetuously. The theme is adult, and I know people married much younger back then but these two were just not believable. Both immature and emotional.
I listened to the whole thing, hoping I'd learn to like them but I didn't.

Well-written Scottish Romance

I really enjoyed the backstory/meeting of the two main characters. It was cute to watch Alex defend Lucy. Although they have a few heated moments together, it wasn't a book dripping with sex or sexual intent. I think there could have been a bit more for me.

A slight love triangle. Lucy really prefers to marry an English man rather than a horrible Scot, but her English man doesn't seem interested in proposing to her. The connections between all the characters kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering what they would do.

Overall, fantastic read!

Awful

uh. spoilers... and why did I suffer through it?

I found myself rooting for the evil Elizabeth, because the heroine Lucy was a stupid (incredibly stupid) annoying, paranoid, a cry baby, and extremely immature.
the story... had potential, but sucked.
The "conflict" was never really explained. There was this invisible Lord Langley who never once made an appearance. The evil land manager, never got his comeuppance, other than a one sentence "he's going to jail, and to be hanged...possibly."
Lucy's father just shipped her out without going with his supposed beloved daughter? Lucy is kidnapped but again, was it because of the land manager, or lord Langley?
The story itself was arduous and boring. I legit skipped chapters, but like a soap opera, I didn't miss a damn thing.

okay, the narrator. She did a decent job, but her "male" voices all sound the same. which made it monotonous and dull. She made Lucy sound like a whiney girl and it grated on my nerves. THAT BEING SAID, I think the narrator is talented, but not for multiple male characters. Two at most.

this was a free book, and I'm certainly glad I didn't buy it. I don't know if I'll read more from this author unless someone can promise me that the author's writing improves.

Meet the Sinclairs

I very much enjoyed this story. I read the second book in this series first, however that did not cause me any problem while listening to this one. The Sinclair family is full of huge, handsome and loyal men. When Alex Sinclair turns twenty, his father, Laird John, and his father's best-friend, The Duke of Chatham, arrange for the marriage of their children. Lucy is illegitimate and her father sees this as a great opportunity to get away from the snide comments in London, as well as to get a wonderful husband. Unfortunately, Lucy does not agree. She does not want to marry this man she met once when she was just a young child, but agrees to go to Scotland and meet him. Of course there are many trials along the way to their love and marriage.

At the beginning of the story, I did not like Lucy very much. She was rather spoiled and a bit haughty. I quickly saw that she was frightened and was actually a very nice person. She cared about others very much, but her ingrained sense of propriety tended to come across as her thinking she was too good for the Scots. She was also not sure what to expect due to what she had heard from others over the years about the "Dirty Scots". Alex was also a great character; strong, handsome, a fierce warrior, and a determined protector of his people and those he loved. It was a good story learning how they dealt with the trials they came across in their travel to love. They do have chemistry and they work well together, when they actually talk and listen, and they both become not only resigned to the marriage, but look forward to it as well. When the villains show up to derail the burgeoning love affair, there are some battles and gallantry with good triumphing over evil. I loved the ending, simple yet sweet. There are a couple of sex scenes, mildly sexy, but not overdone. I am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series to see who Magnus ends up with and what the rest of his story brings. The narration in the book was not bad. All the men sounded the same but I did enjoy the accents and the language. I would definitely listen to another book using this Ruth Urquhart as narrator.

It’s ok

There were some well-written scenes but I struggled to like this one. Some things are hard to believe, like the heroine traveling to Scotland to get married to a stranger by herself. Surely her duke father would’ve sent her with an entourage? Some kind of escort?? The narrator did a good Scottish accent as far as I can tell, but the French one was pretty off. I felt like the peppering of French words was trying to add interest to an otherwise uninteresting character.

The narrator's timing was off and the fall at the end of sentences or phraseswith little other variety or pacing was too much.

A bit predictable yet enjoyable. narrator average

Whilst the story was somewhat predictable and Lucy was sometimes frustrating as a character I still enjoyed it over all.

And as the series is free with Audible membership it's not bad for something different. I will listen for the rest of the series.
