あらすじ・解説

In the latest book in the widely beloved No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, Precious Ramotswe takes on a case for a childhood acquaintance, but her inquiries will require an even more delicate touch than usual.

Mma Ramotswe reconnects with an old friend who has been having problems with her daughter. Though Precious feels compelled to lend a hand, she discovers that getting involved in family affairs is always a delicate proposition.

Mr. J. L. B. Matekoni finds himself embroiled in familial drama as well when one of his clients asks for help evicting an unwanted houseguest who turns out to be the man's own brother. Elsewhere, Charlie and Fanwell are also involved in tricky matters of the heart, as Queenie-Queenie, Charlie's girlfriend, seems to have transferred her affections to Fanwell. It's up to Mma Makutsi to set things right, but she may be be too distracted by her nemesis Violet Sephotho, who has somehow been appointed to the board of a charity. What is Violet up to now?

As all of these mysteries are unravelled, Mma Ramotswe and the entire No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency will be reminded of the value of tried-and-true wisdom - never judge a book by its cover.

Good but just missing some details.

I read the summary of the book before ordering and then realized some of the things mentioned didn't even happen. Not one of the best in the series, but still not bad. I did enjoy the narrator again, I think she does a good job.

A Treat, but the Narration !

What a gem to listen to Alexander McCall-Smith book based in Gaberone, Botswana. This time Ms Andoh, failed to get the pronunciation of Se-Tswana names right which made for a grating in listening. The humour and pretensions of living in a small "city" came out very well. We look forward to more books from this series.

A good book let down by the narration

The familiar characters of the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency are off on another case, and they proceed the way we have come to expect and enjoy, but the narration gets to be grating after a while as the different voices become strident to the point of annoying especially when reading Charlie's part. I found myself losing the will to finish the book and had to really hang in there to get to the conc!usion. This is better as a written book than an audio version and I feel the purchase of the audio book was a mistake

Summary of book in "Book Details" is incorrect

Overall I enjoyed this book, but as a previous review said over a year ago, the summary given on audible is incorrect.

"Mr. J. L. None of this happens in this book. As the previous reviewer said, it does mean that there's a feeling you're missing something, until you realise it's a mistake.

I enjoy the calm and placid way these stories plod along. The characters are engaging and I would love to share a cup of tea with Mma Ramotswe.

The Voice.

Really enjoy Alexander McCall Smith's books including the Ladys Detective Agency series.
What spoils it for me is the reading, supposedly mimicking Africans, the Adjoa Andoh thinks necessary. I have met a lot of Africans in Africa, various countries. None of them speak in that exaggerated screeched manners. It just spoils the listening experience. Took away from my enjoyment of the book.

The story continues.....

Full of observations on the diverse behaviour of human beings. I
found it amusing in places and laughed out loud.

Welcome back old friends

In times when we need somewhere to escape to where decency, gentleness and the better aspects of humanity hold sway, this series is a blessing. Keep them coming, Sandy!
