あらすじ・解説

Please Note: This content is not for kids. This audio comedy features adult language (hurled especially at one malicious, phony Kelly Smith). Discretion is advised.

In this dramatic comedy, Parks and Recreation and Good Girls star Retta brings humor and strength to her role as the unforgettable Tinaca Jones.

What’s in a name? A lot. The name Tinaca, for example, has been passed down in the Jones family for generations of women. In fact, the Joneses name a Tinaca every other generation, to let the name breathe a little. To let each Tinaca shine. And shine is exactly what Tinaca Jones intends to do.

A grocery cashier by day and household name in the making by night, Tinaca Jones pays her dues, saves her coins, and takes business and marketing classes. She spends every second readying to launch her lifestyle brand for anyone who wants to live like her - that is, intentionally and fabulously. But when a basic blonde with an even more basic name, Kelly Smith, approaches her register and peeps her nametag, Tinaca’s plans come crashing down all around her.

The next thing Tinaca knows, Kelly Smith has launched herself into overnight fame with a pathetic, old-as-time, red-carpet stunt, using the stage name "Tinaca Jones". But Kelly Smith messed with the wrong woman. What follows is Tinaca Jones’s wild and triumphant account of the battle to reclaim her name, told over the course of an epic and hilarious deposition.

Offended

I tried to give this book a chance because “Retta” but I could barely get 10 min in before having to turn it off. It’s trying too hard but what can I expect when the writer is a white man. And the name “Tinaca” is not even spelled the way it’s pronounced. The dialogue, the everything was awful. You can tell this was NOT written by a Black woman. Black women are dynamic indeed but I have never heard a Black woman speak this way. Audible please do NOT try me with another free book like this again.

Can you give zero stars?

As a Black Woman I think I speak for us all when I say this was some bulls#1+! This caricature was annoying, obnoxious & offensive.

I didn’t believe it.

I read the reviews that said how horrible this was. For some reason I was like nah it can’t be that bad. It’s Retta.
The story is bad, the premise of the story is bad & so is the read. Please save your time. Don’t think oh it’s only 2 hours. That two hours you can’t get back. Just say no.
This has no redeeming qualities. None‼️

Stereotypical garbage.

I couldn't even finish this mess. I am disappointed that Retta would even participate in this.

Sounds Like Blackface

The protagonist in this story was such a caricature that I had to look up the author. I wasn't the least but surprised to discover a white man had written this. it is filled with outdated heavily used slang and stereotypes about Black American women. The only positive thing I can say about this is that Retta seems to be a good actress. I just don't know why she agreed to do this performance, it is offensive. I'm glad I didn't have to use a credit for it.

I couldn’t even finish this story. This a poor depiction of black women. Very disappointed.

Painful Reminder of How Many People Think of Me

I intentionally didn't research the author before finishing this book. It's cringy. I forced myself to stick with it, hoping that I'd find a reason to explain why Tinaca feels like a character developed to make fun of Black women. I felt like I was reading a book that was written by the White people I work with who insist on punctuating their sentences with "girlfriend" when conversing with me. You know, the type of White people who assume that I am merely the keeper of random pop culture references-- despite the fact that I am the only person among them who holds a doctoral degree. Why is she so exaggerated? The humor is so corny that it's offensive. Don't do this again, please. Ouch.

Insulting garbage.

Don't waste your time listening to this. It was written by someone who has no respect for his subject. The main character is empty, and has not an ounce of substance. Even though it was free, the book cost too much, since I can't get my time back.

Retta is awesome! Very talented and so funny.

I didn’t know what to expect with this funny cover, but it peeked my interested but didn’t have high hopes because it was a free listening book. But I’m very happy I gave it a chance, it is extremely well written and Retta is a brilliant actor. She helped make Tinaca Jones an unforgettable character. If you get offended by bad language, don’t bother listening, but you are really short changing yourself because the writing is well done, and honest! Those familiar with Hollywood knows this s@*$ is real, and Matt Boren knows how to tell a story. Cheers to brilliant comedy, and I hope to hear more about Tinaca Jones!!!

OMG MAKE IT STOP

This is pure utter garbage but what can you expect when you have a very white man writing from the prospective of a "strong black woman". I couldn't finish it and I can't for the life of me understand how the narrator could read this shit. At the very least, she could have pulled the writer aside to work on making this sound like something a black woman might actually say instead of reading through his exhausting attempts at AAVE.

"Seen it with my own damn fly eyes"

"Pull out a soap box at the quick" to defend Gwyenth Paltrow?

"I ain't running a soup kitchen up in my life"

I don't know any black people that talk like this. And Matt Boren clearly doesn't know many black people at all.

Everything about this sucks.

Love Retta. This audio was hilarious. Story was nuts but Retta brought it to life. Really enjoyed this and a good listen while you’re doing chores.
