あらすじ・解説

Distilled to its essence, the ancient Greco-Roman philosophy known as Stoicism is a philosophy of personal betterment. Professor Pigliucci, who knows firsthand just how transformative a Stoic approach to life can be, has designed these 25 lessons as an enlightening introduction to the basics of Stoic philosophy and ways to incorporate its lessons into your own life.

For example, the Stoic understanding of ethics was far broader than the study of right and wrong, encompassing questions concerning one’s goals and one’s relationship to other people. Also, the Stoics felt that logic was another requirement of a well-lived life, because good thinking helps protect us from living according to nonsensical notions.

Throughout the course, you’ll investigate what these great philosophers’ words and deeds can teach us about living life in the 21st century. What does Seneca tell us about managing our time in the best way possible? Why did Epictetus suggest to debate patiently with disagreeable people? Can Marcus Aurelius’ philosophy of being mindful of the labels we give ourselves help make the world a better place?

This course includes plenty of exercises you can use to retrain your mind to take on a more Stoic view of your life and the world around you. Yes, you’ll come away with an incredible wealth of knowledge about the history and principles of one of the most enduring philosophies of life - but you’ll also be on your way to a more meaningful life for yourself.

PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

Detailed but digestible

Very detailed breakdown of Stoic principles but also very easy to listen to and grasp key concepts. Massimo does a great job of covering these topics without sounding preachy as well.

A lot to love. A little to object to.

What I REALLY loved about this was that professor seemed fully invested in the material. It is clear that he believes in and strives to live what he teaches.

The material seems to be a nice wide view of stoic philosophy. Probably one if the best places to start a stoic journey.

A couple of dislikes. One thing was that he repeats quotes, anecdotes and some opinions in several places. This isn't bad per se. But it is like he didn't know he had covered it before. It was a little distracting.

Also, he definitely didn't do a very good job of keeping his political views out of the presentation, as well as some personal opinions.

He considers that all rich have been unethical, a position he asserts but doesn't support. This despite the fact the two of the most sited sources were an emperor and the ancient equivalent of an investment banker; among the richest men on the planet.

Veganism and several left leaning political positions are asseted as well.

But, none of this is ruinous of the course. Because it really is well done and passionately delivered, I think it stands to change quite a few lives, and thus the world at large, for the better.

Well-done

I'll do my best to review as a Stoic would.

The speaker spent every minute wisely and clearly, and his pace was easy to follow. He offered analogies and anecdotes to really dig in the messages being taught, and provided a little history lesson too!

I'd recommend to anyone trying to find direction and peace in these often-turbulent times.

Great outline on applying stoicism

The course was good. It was great at giving practical methods to implement Stoic Virtue and practices in your life.

I did think though, his biases were very evident especially in his explanation of the theory and it’s relationship to God(s) and religion and his stating that while Christianity was heavily influenced by Stoicism but they are not compatible even though history says otherwise. I just thought it distracted from the book whether you follow a religion or not.

His take on economics is very apparent and it detracts from the content. He would use economic examples but it was apprenticed he has total lack of understanding of economic knowledge and this lack of economic understanding is cringe worthy at times and took away from the lesson.

He uses great examples of how people apply stoicism but then discounts others who apply it because they may be sports coaches, athletes, and billionaires. I may agree with him in some instances but it made me question why the good examples were any different than the bad ones.

Over all this is a great course to understand the fundamentals of Stoicism and how to apply it to your life. I will continue to read/listen to other works by the author.

Dr. Pigliucci is a genius

In a world filled with academic philosophers who teach it but don't live by it, Dr. Pigliucci is a fresh face in the world of modern philosophy. a philosophy professor can teach you all he wants about each philosopher that's ever lived, but living by each philosopher he teaches is different.

I've listened to many episodes of Dr. Pigliucci's Stoic Meditations podcast but this course is a much deeper dive into the ideas presented. It is because of this course that I bought the writings of Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius with plans of buying works of other stoic philosophers in the future. Please give this course a listen its changed but also reaffirmed some of my ideas of the world.

Brilliant, practical and thought provoking

I absolutely love “The Great Courses” and purchased this during the summer sale. This particular course is well thought out and one you can listen to multiple times. Professor Pigliucci does a fantastic job explaining Stoicism and offers sound examples on how to think like a stoic. His narration and accent gave the audio a certain charm that actually made it more enjoyable to listen to and follow along. Highly recommended!

A Satisfactory Meal

I’m a big fan of stoicism; so, I was likely to enjoy the course. And it provided the basics. It was a satisfactory meal.

But information on stoicism is widely available. I’m not sure there was a huge amount of value add here.

On the other hand, it’s here, and in one place. If you want that and you get it here on Audible, either for a credit or on sale, you may very well be pleased.

Very informative and easy to follow

I enjoyed listening to the author share about stoicism and its history. Occasionally a bit repetitive as the same story would be shared a few times in different contexts, but useful to show the usefulness of the same lessons.
