In Creal Springs, Illinois, the dying is peaceful. That's the worst part.

They go easy, in their sleep, with a look on their faces the undertaker doesn't have to fix. The county calls it a hard winter. Old hearts. Cold nights. Nothing to see.

Eli Crews sees it.

He fixes water wells. He has a wife who is better than he deserves, a daughter who thinks he hung the moon, and a thing he did in a stairwell in Ramadi that he has never said out loud to a living soul. When the men from his Tuesday veterans' group start dying, Eli finds the pattern nobody wants to look at:

Every one of them finally told the worst thing they had ever done.

Every one of them said it alone, in the dark.

Every one of them had three nights left.

Something beneath the ruins of the old Springs Hotel has been listening for a hundred years. It does not chase. It does not threaten. It waits in a gray room with an empty chair—patient, kind, endlessly interested—and it offers the unheard the one thing they have never been given: someone who will hear all of it, and stay.

To save his town, Eli has to learn the difference between confessing and being witnessed. To save himself, he has to say the unsayable to the one person he'd die before hurting.

He is the last man in the county still holding his tongue.

And he is running out of reasons to.

THE TELLING is a novel of quiet, patient horror—about veterans, small towns, the weight of what we swallow, and the terrible mercy of being known. For fans of Paul Tremblay, John Langan, and Stephen King in his quietest mode.

Contains war trauma, grief, suicide, sexual content, and brief scenes of violence. Intended for adult listeners.
