あらすじ・解説

Making conscientious choices about technology in our families is more than just using Internet filters and determining screen time limits for our children. It's about developing wisdom, character, and courage in the way we use digital media rather than accepting technology's promises of ease, instant gratification, and the world's knowledge at our fingertips. And it's definitely not just about the kids.

Drawing on in-depth original research from the Barna Group, Andy Crouch shows listeners that the choices we make about technology have consequences we may never have considered. He takes listeners beyond the typical questions of what, where, and when and instead challenges them to answer provocative questions like "Who do we want to be as a family?" and "How does our use of a particular technology move us closer or farther away from that goal?" Anyone who has felt their family relationships suffer or their time slip away amid technology's distractions will find in this book a path forward to reclaiming their real life in a world of devices.

Insightful, powerful, life changing

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I picked up this audiobook but this definitely far exceeded my expectations. It's like you're having a conversation with a good friend who is giving you advice on how to have a fulfilling life and deep connections with those around you. I have long felt that technology was taking over our family in ways that were out of my comfort zone but I didn't know exactly how to change it. After running into some questionable search terms on my son's tablet I knew it was time for radical change. I turned to this book to get some insight and left a different person.

My key takeaway from the book is that technology fills our voids. The ease of technology is taking the time that we once would have spent cultivating skills, developing talents, solving problems, being creative, and connecting with others in deep and meaningful ways. Because technology then becomes our default setting, it opens up risk for suffering in other ways. It is a spiral effect in which you don't have the skills to feel time and meaningful ways and thus are defaulting back to technology again and again.

I appreciate that the author is not giving a speech about how to live your life, but is offering insightful advice about how to develop the kind of life we all want. He shares insights to his own family and how they have used technology purposefully. He is also not saying to get rid of technology completely, but to be intentional about how you use your technology.

This is a book I will turn to again and again and highly recommend to anyone looking to have more control over the use of technology in their life.

Why? Not How-to

This book is a fantastic resource for aligning your family’s use of tech with your faith. It is mostly philosophical but the end of the book specifically the last 4-5 chapters pack a punch with sobering wisdom and practically. I highly recommend this book.

Enjoyed

I appreciate the way he talks about how technology is not all bad and we need to put it in its proper place. I like the practical ways to make simple changes. As a mom of 5 teenagers this was a good reminder.

Incredible and Poignant

I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. These words were “like apples of gold in a picture of silver.” Andy Crouch shared the wisdom that people need to hear eloquently and articulately. The ten commitments that his family made to protect each other from the inundation of technology are very practical, biblical and doable. These commitments will build families that can withstand the pressures of this life together. It is my prayer that the “first family” will be revitalized as individuals within the body of Christ will learn how to shelter each other from the “easy everywhere” that surrounds us.

So helpful

This is a great book to help think through how we should be using tech tools.
Practical, helpful, wise, full of warm and honest anecdotes, interesting statistics, all fleshed out in the author’s own family experience.
I highly recommend this book as compulsory reading for parents or indeed, anyone in this tech saturated age!

Easy listen with huge challenges.

Really enjoyed listening to this. Its content is insightful with very practical steps to help families put technology in the right place, all from a Christian mindset. Before even finishing the book was taking steps to free our family from all consuming nature of technology.
