あらすじ・解説

Blue Wing lives with her guardian Siringen, a shark caller, on the outskirts of her village. She’s desperate to become a shark caller herself to avenge the death of her parents, who were killed by a notorious shark, Xok. But it’s against tradition for a girl to become one, and Siringen believes Blue Wing still harbours too much anger in her heart.

When American Professor Atlas Hamelin and his daughter, Maple, arrive on the island, Blue Wing is charged with looking after the infuriating Maple. But, slowly, Blue Wing finds that Maple might be the one person who can understand her. And when they discover that Professor Hamelin is secretly searching for an ancient treasure, they find themselves on a journey to depths of the ocean, where Xok lies waiting.

Good story, but lots of irritation (for me)

Recording:
First half was bad. Irritating. Sounds like some phrases were recorded separately on a different microphone and in a different distance, and edited together. There were some parts where a word or a phrase just stand out for no reason in middle of that sentence. Very annoying. However those were only in the first half, the rest was OK.

Accent:
Not a big fan of these make-shift fake accents. I’m not familiar to the Papua New Guinean accent, and as there are over 800 languages in that country so I guess any accent is possible. BUT. When one fakes an accent that’s not native to self, it just is awkward because the voice actor just cannot be consistent…

Same goes for Maple’s American accent. Overall is OK but there were some that were not obviously American accent which I found was distracting. Perhaps I tend to be critical on the accent because I was annoyed with the recording. Also Maple, an American girl uses British terms and were read in American accent. That just sounds so awkward.

I like the plot and the bittersweet ending really made me cry, but the author and the editor and whoever, really need to do some research. As a Japanese national who grew up in US, I find the Japanese names very VERY unusual and hence awkward.

Also on scuba diving - tanks are NOT called gas tanks, nor air bottles. OK so maybe the narrator, the protagonist Blue Wing did not have that knowledge, but still. And one would never scuba dive solo, for safety reasons. And would never give air underwater to a free diver who had never had proper scuba training. It’s very dangerous….

Editors, PLEASE do some reality check for the next edition. It’s a good book, my 9-year-old daughter loved it and asked me to listen to it after she finished. But these minor irritation almost spoils it.
