The story behind cult classic Repo Man, the movie that bought punk rock to the masses and became an underground sensation.

In 1984, punk rock was on the ropes—clubs shuttered by violence, bands dropped by labels, and mainstream America eager to forget punk ever existed. Then a scrappy indie-style studio film arrived and changed everything. Directed by the daring and eccentric Alex Cox and starring Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez, Repo Man seemed destined to be forgotten. A punk-inspired, sci-fi-inflected story of a young suburban outcast seduced into the seedy world of repossessing cars, it barely registered at the box office upon its release.

But the film's explosive soundtrack, featuring “Repo Man” by Iggy Pop along with tracks by Black Flag, the Circle Jerks, and Suicidal Tendencies, landed in the stereos of thousands of suburban and rural teenagers who had never even heard punk music before. Through clandestine screenings and bootlegged VHS tapes passed among friends, Repo Man would become a de facto Easy Rider for Gen X in its formative years, and an unlikely yet enduring cult classic that would influence the next generation of auteurs like Quentin Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson.

In The Repo Code, Jim Ruland, the Boswell of SoCal punk rock, will trace the film's extraordinary journey from guerrilla filmmaking to cultural touchstone, detailing Alex Cox's unorthodox storytelling, producer (and former Monkee) Michael Nesmith's improbable involvement, and the soundtrack's surprising commercial success.

Along the way, anecdotes from actors, crewmembers, and musicians capture LA in all its gritty ’80s glory, as well as the tension of a punk movement fighting for survival. Interwoven chapters unpack the iconic soundtrack, telling the story behind each song and their impact on the movie, the artist, and music history.
