あらすじ・解説

We know of psychopaths from chilling headlines and stories in the news and movies - from Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy to Hannibal Lecter and Dexter Morgan. As Dr. Kent Kiehl shows, psychopaths can be identified by a checklist of symptoms that includes pathological lying; lack of empathy, guilt, and remorse; grandiose sense of self-worth; manipulation; and failure to accept one’s actions. But why do psychopaths behave the way they do? Is it the result of their environment - how they were raised - or is there a genetic component to their lack of conscience?

This is the question Kiehl, a protégé of famed psychopath researcher Dr. Robert Hare, was determined to answer as he began his career 20 years ago. To aid in his quest to unravel the psychopathic mind, Kiehl created the first mobile functional MRI scanner to study psychopaths in prison populations. The brains of more than 500 psychopaths and 3,000 other offenders have been scanned by Kiehl’s laboratory - the world’s largest forensic neuroscience repository of its kind. Over the course of The Psychopath Whisperer, we follow the scientific bread crumbs that Kiehl uncovered to show that the key brain structures that correspond with emotional engagement and reactions are diminished in psychopaths, offering new clues to how to predict and treat the disorder.

In The Psychopath Whisperer, Kiehl describes in fascinating detail his years working with psychopaths and studying their thought processes - from the remorseless serial killers he meets with behind bars to children whose behavior and personality traits exhibit the early warning signs of psychopathy.

A compelling narrative of cutting-edge science, The Psychopath Whisperer will open your eyes on a fascinating but little-understood world, with startling implications for society, the law, and our personal lives.

An autobiography with splatter of neuropsychology.

Any additional comments?

This book primarily is about the author's career.
There are interesting stories and information about psychopathy, less than 25% of book.
Well produced, excellent narrator.

Not about the results

Would you try another book from Kent A. Kiehl and/or Kevin Pariseau?

This is more the life story of this author, not much about the key insights. Can be a shorter book! I will have to think about it.

Has The Psychopath Whisperer turned you off from other books in this genre?

Nope

Have you listened to any of Kevin Pariseau’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Psychopath Whisperer?

Keep it short and focus on insights. This is less about the science and more about the story of the Researcher. The book in itself is not bad but it is not true to the Title. It's misleading.

Boring Psychopaths?

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I didn't think it was possible to take a subject like Psychopathy and make it boring, but this author has managed it splendidly.

What could Kent A. Kiehl have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Let me count the ways! Learn to edit, for one. Pacing was slow, characters flat and one dimensional, too much information about irrelevant things (do we really need to know every detail about moving psychopaths from the prison to the hospital, including the author buying everybody donuts, and Starbucks coffee?) and not enough about people and things we should care about. This book is a good example of why the humanities are still relevant - the best writers of non-fiction understand what makes a book inform and grip the audience.

Would you be willing to try another one of Kevin Pariseau’s performances?

I didn't like the narration - Pariseau had odd, jerky timing, with little pauses at inappropriate places that I found very irritating. To be fair, I think perhaps reading a better written book I might have been more tolerant.

What character would you cut from The Psychopath Whisperer?

Kent A. Kiehle - that is who I would have cut!

Any additional comments?

Don't waste your money on this book. If you are interested in the subject check out "The Psychopath Test" by Jon Ronson, or "The Sociopath Next Door" by Martha Stout.

This is an autobiography with educational content

This book is essentially a career-focused autobiography of Kent Kiehl. A major chunk of the book is about is physical/political progress as a scientist. By the nature of the research, there is a lot of data accumulation with relatively little actual analysis (at least this is reinforced in the book). It is an enjoyable listen and is easy to comprehend for those who haven't had a scientific background especially as acronyms (EEG, DSM, etc) are repeatedly defined or said fully. It can seem a little slow and repetitive at times. It is also very clear that the author thinks very highly of himself.

A couple of the more interesting portions of the book include comparing the psychopatic tendencies between Charles Guiteau (murdered President Garfield) and John Booth (murdered Lincoln) in chapter 3 and the discussion on child evaluations. He interviews a number of prison inmates and serial killers.

While this listen _is_ educational it is more entertaining than it is educational. This is good if you want a very mild educational listen and have interest but very little/no background in the study of psychopathy.

More Please

This is a fascinating and interesting book. I have eread all the books by Dr. Robert Hare, so when I learned that Dr. Kiehl had worked wtih Dr. Hare I was sold on this book. Dr. Kiehl has taken this very complex field of neuroscience and the psychopath and had made it digestible for the non neuroscience major.

I loved this book. It explains a lot of things about psychopaths. I would highly recommend this book especially if you have read the Sociopath Next Door by Martha Stout and Snakes in Suits by Robert Hare.

Self indulgent crap

I was expecting a scientific book and instead listened to someone talk about himself in the highest regard for too many hours. Dull.

SUPER interesting

This was a terrific book about someone who professionally practices the field of abnormal psychology. As a "Criminal Minds" addict, I loved hearing the practical science behind psychological diagnoses. I was very impressed by Dr. Kiehl's career path (as a psychology major, it illustrated the grueling path of becoming a research professional well.. and made me happy that I chose a more practical carreer!) and thought his case studies were beyond interesting. I also feared that many of my questions would go un-answered in this book, but this was not the case. While he used convicted felons as his primary source of knowledge, I learned about the development, diagnosis, treatment, and current issues in the field of psychopathy... as well as some insight to my favorite "unsubs" on Criminal Minds!

This narrator will have to reign among my favorites. He read in the exact style I prefer- few accents/affectations on the dialogue, velvety voice, and inflections that clearly indicated the punctuation of the standard text.

Ev'thing you wanted to know but were afraid to ask

What did you like best about this story?

This book is a mostly entertaining, first hand account of Kiehl’s professional experiences studying criminal psychopaths. It is informative without getting too technical (though there is a heavy focus on Kiehl’s brain imagining work) and the listener will come away with both a sense of who/what constitutes a psychopath as well as the somewhat unsettling notion that there are still more unknowns than knowns about its causes and treatments. Kiehl relates all this in a breezy, informal narrative that includes many fascinating case studies of youth and adults he has worked with over several decades. The title is probably misleading – Kiehl makes no claims to having any great gifts or abilities to relate to psychopaths but what the book does admirably is to shed light on the many falsehoods, misconceptions, and unknowns we have about this (thankfully) small sub-set of humankind. The narration is good in conveying Kielh as the “kind of guy you would like to go out with for a beer” while also subtly reminding the listener that these are real people we are hearing about. My only complaint is that the narrative occasionally diverges too much from the topic or digresses into detailed tangents (e.g. the procuring of various MRI machines) that could have either been edited down or out. Still, as long as you are neither scared off or repulsed by the topic, TPW is worth a read.

Narrator was great!

This book was not worth what I paid. I am not sure why is it titled The Psychopath Whisper; better title would be, Burgers,Steaks, and quad espressos with Kent and friends. The last chapter was the best.

Excellent

A book that takes complicated academic pursuits and synthesizes them in such a way that they are made accessible to the masses, The Psychopath Whisperer is a book I would highly recommend to academics and non-academics alike.

Fascinating Book

The study of psychopaths has always fascinated me, and I often wondered how many I have encountered during my nine-year career in the police. More often than not, people who commit heinous crimes are angry with the world for their own reasons and when you look into their background you can see why. Many have their own belief systems and motivations. Some are of low intelligence and easily influenced, while others commit crime out of desperate need.
But every once in a while the person who commits such crimes lacks any a sense of empathy or compassion, feels no guilt for their acts and do not appear to care or even consider the repercussions. These are the ones who make us scratch our head and wonder why.
As an author of crime novels, eat up books like these. I thoroughly enjoy the research that goes into each and every novel I write and am often amazed by what I uncover. I bought The Psychopath Whisperer on audiobook and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's very well written with a personal touch which makes the story flow nicely. It kept me engaged throughout, and I would read further books by this author. I enjoyed hearing about his interactions with the prisoners most of all, and the different characters he met. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about psychopaths.

Initially promising....

Initially I thought it was a really great listen, however after 2 thirds through...it began to sound like a lecture. A lecture that you had to pinch yourself to stay awake through.

Really disappointing, I feel this author used this book to self propagate his own opinions in psychopathy led by his own whiskey and cigar fueld ego.
Did not finish the book. Sorry. But please author??
Remember we are paying to listen and therefore have a right to an opinion.

Read Without Conscience instead

As the title says. If you want to know about psychopathy read Without Conscience. If you have already read the aforementioned book even then there is no reason to read The Psychopath Whisperer, since it adds nothing new to the subject. Instead The Psychopath Whisperer reads like a diary of a narcissist. It mostly tells in vivid details about Kent A. Kiehls career and personal life. His descriptions about dinners with his peers seem like attempts to impress those associated with him. His descriptions about his career sound like unashamed bragging. All in all Kent A. Kiehl gives an impression about himself as a man who has little to say about the subject of psychopathy and whose career is made by his social skills with his peers alone. Not a a good read. Worst book about psychopathy I have read. In fact The Psychopath Whisperer may be the worst scientific book I have ever read. If you like memoirs and want to know what Kent A. Kiehl eats, then go ahead and read this book. To anyone who wants insight into psychopathy read something else.

Unfortunately struggled to finish.

Interesting and informative in places, as a psychologist I enjoyed the forensic and neuroscience research aspects. However, I found it frankly dull to hear what felt like endless bragging about the author's bonuses, deals and wages in the latter half. Also, really didn't need to know one of the author's colleagues was a 'petite blonde' with no comparable descriptions of male colleges (distracting, misogynistic, and cheap in my opinion). Personal narratives can add such richness to what might otherwise be dry academic books, but this really missed the mark towards the end.

Good story on the study of psychopaths

An excellent introduction into the psychopathic mind, or at least the ones who end up in prison.

That's my only critisim of the book that its focus was on the prison population (albiet easier for the author to access and study) and not the psychopaths who stay out of prison but thrive in the upper echelons of society; in the cooperate world, law, the military, police and even medicine. For me referring to that type of psychopath as well, and the damage they can also do, as well as the benefit they can be to a society, would have made the book more interesting to read.

Some readers critisise the authors account of his personal journey in the study of psychopaths but if taken as a story, rather like the Netflix series the Mind Hunters, then I found this an enjoyable dimension to the book.

For me the book was an informative and overall a good listen.

Also well narrated.

Fascinating!

Great narration and interesting information on the science of psychopathy.

I listen to a lot of nonfiction books, so the story-telling style of this book was a nice change from the delivery style I'm used to.
I think it would have been an easy one to have binge-listened to if I'd had the time.

Fascinating read. A journey from student research to current day. Filled with examples, insights, explanation. I found it a real page Turner, which I hadn't expected. Easily accessible, informative, just a great read. Narrator sounds a little like he's left caps lock on, but I got used to him. The story sold itself

More of an autobiographical book

Interesting audio book and the book contains some fascinating facts and discoveries about psychopaths but the book is also told from an autobiographical aspect by the author which has details that get boring at times. Still worth a listen though.

Informative, interesting and enjoyable!

For anyone that has an interest in the mindset of a psychopath, The Psychopath Whisperer, is an informative and interesting book on the workings of a psychopath's brain.

The book is written in a way that informs the listener but doesn't 'get bogged down' with medical and technical terms. It keeps you listening while informing you through Kiehl's life story, and case studies of cases he has encountered.

Narration can be at time bland, but, as it is not a 'storybook' can be overlooked, and certainly doesn't take away from the experience.
