あらすじ・解説

Horrifying, heartbreaking and eye-opening, these are the stories, the patients and the cases that have characterised a career spent behind bars.

The no-holds-barred memoirs of a GP who went from working at a quiet suburban practice to treating the country’s most dangerous criminals - first in young offenders’ institutions, then at the notorious Wormwood Scrubs and finally at Europe’s largest women-only prison in Europe, Bronzefield.

Enjoyed the stories but the style was painful

An interesting insight into life as a prison doctor in the UK. I enjoyed the stories, albeit tragic and heartbreaking but the tone and style of writing was not for me, it came across as sickly sweet, disingenuous and just annoying.

The "story" is quite good but...

As the title says the content of the book is quite good, but the narration...

I don't really like to criticise narrators as it seems a bit mean, i'm sure she's doing her best, but accents are definitely not her strong suit! I found it quite wearing after a while.

Disappointing

Sorry I struggled with this Audiobook. I was looking for an honest, insightful and factual account of prison medicine.
I found the account somewhat superficial, sugarcoated and self applauding. The narration was competent but the text and narration together over baked the ‘empathy’ theme and became irritating.

awful, self absorbed and boring

Not horrifyiing or heartbreaking or eye opening just constant references to how wonderful and morally superior the doctor is above everyone. uugghh. Also the so called wonderfully caring do the right thing people person gp, after walking out on her village practice and all its patients due to a tantrum over paperwork...she is then apparently contacted to work in a prison which she readily admits to shocking files and paperwork...also half the time she hasnt dealt with this or that....but lets you know she is just so good at her job and doing the right thing. Irritating start to finish

A great book from start to finish.

Great book from start to finish. Sometimes sad. The reader is one of the best I have listened to.

Relatable

After working for HMP myself I could really relate to the stories told and the peolple that were mentioned. A great and honest insight into what staff have to face and manage on a daily basis.

Just finished ‘This Will Hurt’ then listened to this.

Well written and read. A real eye opener. An inspirational account of what the GP Dr Brown did after leaving her own practice behind. This book will challenge all its listeners/readers not to be moved by the real life tragedy of so many of the UK’s men, women and child who end up behind bars.
Yes Dr Brown, your account of your job does make your listeners/readers look at our own lives more closely and hopefully appreciate how fortunate many of us are. Thank you for this valuable insight which other wise I’d not have known anything about. Everyone should have the chance to listen to it read this book.

Hmm

Could have been so much better. Bit self absorbed in places. Also, t narrator should avoid accents.

It’s good but not outstanding

I really enjoyed the narrator’s voice. Her tone and enthusiasm shine clearly through the entire narrative.
The story is done well but I felt it needed to be less about her and more about her patients. I realise that we need the author to weave in and out of the tale but it got a bit bogged down in places.
Did I enjoy the book - yes I did, but I feel that this could have been a real eye opener about the prison system here in the UK but it fell a little short. I’m glad I listened and learned something.
