Dr. Joel C. Hunter
Hold onto your convictions. Stay connected to the people who see things differently.
Faith and politics can strain even our closest relationships. In The Pledge Approach to Faith & Politics, Dr. Joel C. Hunter draws on decades of ministry and public service to explore how we can disagree deeply and still treat one another with dignity.
Hunter knows the cost of crossing political lines. He voted for George W. Bush, delivered the closing prayer after Barack Obama accepted the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, and served as a spiritual adviser to Obama throughout his eight years in office. His experiences brought both encouragement and criticism—and shaped his understanding of what it means to live out a conviction.
Through personal stories and thoughtful reflection, this field guide explores respect, leadership, shared responsibility and the everyday choices that shape a community. Hunter considers how strong beliefs can inform the way we listen, respond to conflict and work alongside people whose views differ from our own.
For those navigating difficult conversations with family, friends, coworkers or neighbors, the book offers a pastoral perspective on staying engaged without letting disagreement define a relationship.
