あらすじ・解説

From the number one international best-selling author of Holy Island and Longstone

The circus is in town....

When a 10-year-old girl turns up on DCI Ryan’s doorstep to tell him she’s witnessed a murder, he has no idea he’s about to step into his most spellbinding case yet. The circus has rolled into Newcastle upon Tyne, bringing with it a troupe of daring acrobats, magicians and jugglers - and one of them is a killer.

Ryan and his team must break through their closed ranks to uncover a secret which has lain buried for eight years, before the killer strikes again - this time, to silence the only living witness....

Murder and mystery are peppered with romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunit set amidst the spectacular Northumbrian landscape.

DCI Ryan is a very entertaining series.

Always love the DCI Ryan books. The narrator does a great job. A good read that kept me guessing til the end.

Loved the book and the wonderful narration..

Another great book with Detective Maxwell Ryan, his colleagues Phillips, Denise and Lowerson. In this one there was 2 stories that were both interesting and mysteries. Lots of murders going on.

And now it looks like Lowerson has got himself in trouble again and I’ll have to read Penshaw to find out what’s going on.

No swearing to speak of and no sex. Just a good clean murder mystery.

As to the narration: As always Jonathan Keeble is awesome! I love everyone’s totally different voice and his emotions when he reads.

Fabulous

Audiobook well worth waiting for! I love Ryan and Frank and Denise and Anna and all the characters. That’s one of the best parts of the series. And Sam is a great addition.

I usually don’t care for circus locations but this made sense. I didn’t guess the killer(s) - no spoilers - but I usually like to wait for the story to unfold.

The narration by Jonathan Keeble is first-rate. He is terrific with all the voices and accents.

And the cliff-hanger ending is only acceptable because I have the next book already downloaded. He does get himself into situations, doesn’t he.

Where's the health warning? These are addictive..

Like so many, I leap on new DCI Ryan books by LJ Ross as soon as they are published, but still can't wait until the Audible edition comes out with Jonathan Keeble reading. Always worth waiting for. his reading is brilliant and adds another layer with his characterisation and accents. Just as one can't imagine listening to Harry Potter read by anyone but Stephen Fry, Jonathan Keeble does the same for DCI Ryan
For this one the team is firmly placed back in the centre of Newcastle, this time when the circus comes back to The Moor after an absence of 8 years. Everyone is assembled from detectives to Chief Constable to forensics to pathologist and it's like revisiting a family of old friends.
Ryan and Anna still as happy, but in this one there's a new face added, Samantha (Sam) age 10, who literally lands up on Ryan's doorstep asking for help with a murder she has witnessed. Sam provides the main case that Ryan and Phillips tackle but at the same time Jack Lowerson and Melanie Yates have some nasty deaths to deal with. One of the two of them handles that well, the other makes some serious errors (no spoilers)
The other effect Sam's introduction has is to develop even more the characters of Frank Phillips and Denise McKenzie. They've always been a mismatched but much loved couple, in this book you'll probably fall for them even more.
This one doesn't finish with all ends neatly tied up, there's a significant cliff hanger, and as such it's good that Jonathan Keeble has also recorded Penshaw - we can move smoothly from one to the next
It's another cracker, both the story and the narration. Totally recommended
... but I still think they should carry health warnings. Totally addictive

Magic once again..

The Moor is another fantastic addition to the DCI Ryan series. This time, a young circus girl turns up on Ryan's doorstep, convinced she remembers information about a murder from when she was just a baby. As Ryan and his team begin to look into the claims, pieces start to fall into place, and the cast of the visiting circus are under the microscope.
Alongside this, a larger plot line seems to be taking shape involving young Jack Lowerson, and the return of a particularly nasty individual from earlier in the series. It will certainly be interesting to see how it unfolds.
Flawless narration once again from Jonathan Keeble.

The Circus comes to town

This time Ryan, Phillips and McKenzie are trying to solve an eight year old murder in the circus community. Alongside this Lowerson, as acting SIO, and Yates are busy trying to solve a series of gangland killings. Towards the end of the book it becomes clear that the two cases might be linked. The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger with one character in peril (good job I already have the next book in the series!)

It was great to meet Ryan’s team again. As always the banter between Ryan and Phillips was hilarious. But the standout character of this book was the wonderfully delightful Samantha. The relationship between her and Phillips and McKenzie was so lovely. She is a child who seems so much older than her ten years, but is also very vulnerable.

This wasn’t my favourite Ryan book. I feel that the plot was a little simplistic but it was still an entertaining story and I can’t wait to get started on the next in the series.

I listened to the Audible version and as always Jonathan Keeble delivers an impeccable, flawless performance.

Samantha

This book introduced a welcome addition to this fascinating family of DCI Ryan’s unit and Samantha breathes a breath of fresh air into the lives of Frank and Denise and the readers.

The Moor.

Great performance as always by Jonathan Keeble. Although I'm a big fan of L J Ross this is definitely not her best and one I can't see myself either re-reading or listening to again. Disappointed.

Expect to laugh and cry

As a mother of a toddler this book really hit a raw spot for me. I laughed, I cried, I carried on following the lead to finding out who the killer was. Excellent work

More of the Same

By more if the same I mean, more brilliance, more gripping storylines and another impeccable performance by Jonathan Keeble. There will be no pause for me, I am straight into Penshaw to see what’s in store for Lowieson at the hands of Ludo. Just wish the stories could be a bit longer.

Never Disappoints

LJ Ross never disappoints and I would even listen to a road map if it was narrated by Jonathan Keeble
