In the second half of the nineteenth century, a brilliant and gentle Frenchman sat down to do the modern world an enormous favor. He would explain Jesus. He would strip away the miracles, the resurrection, the alarming claim of divinity, and hand back a figure everyone could finally admire without embarrassment: a tender Galilean moralist, a poet of the hills, a man. The book was a sensation. It was also, this book argues, a catastrophe of comprehension—and not a unique one.

From the heretics of the fourth century to the demythologizers of the twentieth, from Enlightenment deists to the neuroscientists who now locate God in a fold of the temporal lobe, every age has tried the same trick: to fit the infinite into a pocket and call the result understanding. Each portrait flatters its painter. Each one ages and dies with the era that produced it. And each one, without noticing, quietly removes the one thing that mattered.

What Renan and his many descendants could not see was structure. Beneath the biography lies an architecture—a rigorous logic of two incompatible worlds that no amount of geography, psychology, or cultural analysis can reach. This book is the story of that blindness, told with irony where reduction deserves it and reverence where the subject demands it.
