あらすじ・解説

"Between the three of them, author Alex Michaelides and narrators Louise Brealey and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith cast a spell that will have listeners glued to this suspenseful novel every chance they get." (AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award winner)

"The audiobook is narrated primarily by actor Louise Brealey, who has given life to complex female characters in the audio editions of The Girl on the Train and The Silent Patient, Michaelides’ first novel. Here, she does an excellent job of conveying Mariana’s confusion, courage and determination to solve the mystery at any cost. Actor Kobna Holdbrook-Smith’s nuanced performance as the killer reminds us that monsters are made, not born, and that within even the most heinous murderer is a shattered, lonely child." (Booklist, starred audiobook review)

"Listeners will not be disappointed with this suspenseful and intelligent thriller." (Booklist, starred review)

From the number one New York Times best-selling author of The Silent Patient comes a spellbinding tale of psychological suspense, weaving together Greek mythology, murder, and obsession, that further cements “Michaelides as a major player in the field” (Publishers Weekly).

Edward Fosca is a murderer. Of this Mariana is certain. But Fosca is untouchable. A handsome and charismatic Greek tragedy professor at Cambridge University, Fosca is adored by staff and students alike — particularly by the members of a secret society of female students known as The Maidens.

Mariana Andros is a brilliant but troubled group therapist who becomes fixated on The Maidens when one member, a friend of Mariana’s niece Zoe, is found murdered in Cambridge.

Mariana, who was once herself a student at the university, quickly suspects that behind the idyllic beauty of the spires and turrets, and beneath the ancient traditions, lies something sinister. And she becomes convinced that, despite his alibi, Edward Fosca is guilty of the murder. But why would the professor target one of his students? And why does he keep returning to the rites of Persephone, the maiden, and her journey to the underworld?

When another body is found, Mariana’s obsession with proving Fosca’s guilt spirals out of control, threatening to destroy her credibility as well as her closest relationships. But Mariana is determined to stop this killer, even if it costs her everything — including her own life.

A Macmillan Audio production from Celadon Books

"Stunning.... The intelligent, cerebral plot finds contemporary parallels in Euripides's tragedies, Jacobean dramas such as The Duchess of Malfi, and Tennyson's poetry. The devastating ending shows just how little the troubled Mariana knows about the human psyche or herself. Michaelides is on a roll." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

"A deliciously dark, elegant, utterly compulsive read with a twist that blew my mind. I loved this even more than I loved The Silent Patient and that's saying something!" (Lucy Foley, New York Times best-selling author of The Guest List)

Amazing

This book lived up to “the silent patient”. I think I liked it a little better. There is an overlapping character from “the silent patient” who makes a brief cameo. It’s hard to write a review for this one without giving too much away… but the plot is exquisite. The characters are very well developed and the narration is top notch. If you like dark, twisted, psychological thrillers then don’t miss this one!

It’s like his editor said, “hurry up. We need this out yesterday. Prep if for a sequel. Channel the Hallmark Channel while you’re at it”.

Don’t worry. No spoilers here.

The Maidens

This book was a true disappointment. Wish I could get my credit back. Slow beginning, it dragged on a bit, and the ending came out of nowhere. Really bizarre and boring.

A preposterous story narrated well

The premise of this story was unbelievable from the beginning. That a psychotherapist would attempt to solve a murder outside the police investigation, remove evidence without showing it to the police, investigate solitary areas on her own knowing a murder was on the loose - the list is long. Or that the police would listen to her accusations with the person she suspected present? Disbelief throughout.

Great Twist

I swear this author is the only one who can shock me with the twists in the plot line. Did it with The Silent Patient and again with this book. Tore through it in less than 24 hour and really enjoyed!

Give it a "wink"

Listened to this one in a day, which is a good sign. It's an easy listen and I enjoyed the tour of Cambridge University and the Greek Tragedy tutorial.
The first part of the story is slow and depressing as it deals completely with coping with grief, as our main character is doing just that, as she tries to come to grips with her husband's death, while being a group therapist. The story picks up when Mariana receives a frantic phone call from her niece taking her to Cambridge University and redirecting her path into solving a murder.
Along the way there are suspects aplenty, whom all seemed to give Mariana a "wink", which became annoying to me for some reason. Do people really do that much winking at each other?
Mariana became this amateur sleuth quickly finding clues to the murderer, then wouldn't let go of her theories, even after they were uncorroborated. One of those frustrating kind of stories, that you know will have a major twist, as it does. It did leave me with questions though, which could be from the duel narration of the book.
All in all, it was a good listen as the woman narrator did an excellent portrayal of Mariana.

Disappointed is an understatement

I decided to listen to this book because I enjoyed The Silent Patient. What a huge let down! The book seemed to drag on and the ending was terrible. It’s unfortunate because it had so much potential…save your credit and time!!

Very Disappointing

This entire novel seemed very contrived and totally implausible. I was also disappointed with all of the cliches and unimaginative characters.
