Twenty-two years ago, seven children entered the tunnels beneath Seattle. Only six came home.
Evan Cole disappeared underground without a trace, and the children who survived that night made an unspoken agreement never to reveal what happened. They grew up, scattered, and built separate lives around a secret none of them wanted to remember. Lauren Hayes became an investigative journalist, earning a reputation for uncovering buried truths while carefully avoiding the one mystery that has followed her since childhood.
Everything changes when a missing nine-year-old girl walks out of a sealed tunnel after seventeen hours underground. She is dehydrated, terrified, and somehow alive. When Lauren asks how she found her way out, the girl gives the name of the person who guided her through the darkness: Evan Cole, the boy who vanished twenty-two years earlier.
Lauren’s investigation forces the six surviving friends back together for the first time in decades, but their memories of that night no longer match. One remembers Evan disappearing deeper into the tunnels. Another remembers hearing him call for help. Others recall doors, passages, and events that no one else remembers at all. As forgotten evidence resurfaces and hidden tunnels beneath Seattle begin to reveal themselves, Lauren starts to question whether their memories faded naturally—or whether something happened underground that none of them were meant to remember.
The deeper Lauren digs into the cold case, the more disturbing the mystery becomes. Old friendships begin to fracture, buried childhood secrets emerge, and someone among the survivors may have been lying for more than two decades. Worse, something beneath the city seems to know who they are, what they did, and why Evan never came home.
If Evan Cole died in those tunnels twenty-two years ago, Lauren must answer one impossible question before someone else disappears:
Who brought the little girl home?
