The Life of John Joel Glanton: Texas Ranger, Scalp Hunter, and Outlaw explores the violent and controversial life of one of the most infamous figures of the American frontier. Drawing from primary sources, military records, contemporary newspapers, memoirs, and historical accounts, this book follows Glanton from his early years in South Carolina and Arkansas to his service in the Texas Revolution, the Mexican-American War, and the bloody scalp hunts of northern Mexico.
Serving under legendary Texas Rangers such as John “Jack” Hays and Walter P. Lane, Glanton earned a reputation for fearlessness, brutality, and survival in the violent borderlands of Texas and Mexico. After the Mexican-American War, he descended deeper into violence, eventually leading a gang of scalp hunters contracted by the Mexican state of Chihuahua to hunt Apache warriors for bounty payments. As the violence escalated, Glanton and his men became feared across northern Mexico and the American Southwest, leaving behind a legacy of bloodshed, revenge, and outlaw legend.
Blending military history, frontier biography, and historical research, this book examines both the myths and documented history surrounding Glanton’s life without romanticizing its subject. It is a story of violence, survival, greed, and the brutal realities of the nineteenth-century frontier.
