The performance of a lifetime… by the wrong woman.

June 1956. The world is overjoyed when reclusive superstar Luella Vining announces she’ll appear on a press tour for her new film—a movie she wrote and starred in—after nearly a decade out of the public eye following a broken engagement and mounting scandal. The only problem is, Luella’s dead. Her death was the result of an allergic reaction to a bee sting, and she was discovered by a neighbor only a month before the film’s release. The studio is reeling. Desperate to protect their investment, the studio president hatches a crazy plan: conceal her death and replace her with Winnie Wilkerson, a former look-alike contest winner who once mirrored Luella in both voice and appearance.

When Luella’s manager, Ricky Roberts, finds Winnie, a struggling single mother, working at a drive-in movie theater in West Virginia, Winnie reluctantly agrees to assume Luella’s identity in exchange for medical help for her ailing uncle and financial security for her family. Swept across the country to Los Angeles, into a world where bright lights hide devastating darkness, Winnie steps out of herself to become a woman the world adores. As she sets off on the high-stakes press tour, Winnie grapples with feelings of inadequacy, under-the-microscope scrutiny, the unease coursing beneath a manufactured romantic relationship, and the constant fear of exposure—all while falling for Ricky, a man she knows she can’t have.

As the tour progresses, the deception grows harder to sustain. As media attention becomes relentless, studio pressure increases, and connections from Luella’s past threaten to unravel the carefully constructed lie, the line between Winnie’s life and Luella’s truly starts to blur. The emotional toll of assuming Luella’s identity begins to weigh on her, especially as her connection with Ricky deepens and the process makes her question her contentedness in the life she left behind.

By the time the tour concludes, Winnie is forced to confront the cost of the ruse—on her sense of self, her relationships, and her future. Being Luella Vining, stepping out of herself, has changed everything. As Winnie wrestles with determining who she is and who she wants to be, she realizes that purpose and love always lead you home.
