Some roads are travelled only once. Others never let you leave.
Kenji is an experienced traveller, accustomed to quiet mountain paths and isolated villages. When his journey takes him along an ancient mountain road marked by eleven lanterns leading to the secluded village of Shizumori, he expects nothing more than a long walk before nightfall.
Instead, the lanterns begin to change.
Their warm light weakens as he approaches, only to recover after he passes. Beyond their glow, something unseen moves patiently through the forest, always keeping pace but never revealing itself.
Shizumori appears peaceful. The streets are quiet. The residents are polite. The lanterns burn day and night. Yet time no longer behaves as it should. Morning never truly arrives, memories begin to blur, and familiar details quietly slip beyond recall.
As the days pass, Kenji finds himself adapting to the village without ever deciding to. His walks follow the lanterns. His memories become uncertain. Even his notebook begins preserving things he can no longer remember.
Then one terrifying truth begins to emerge.
The lanterns are not there to guide travellers.
They are there to protect them from whatever waits beyond their light.
Blending the quiet unease of Japanese folk horror with slow-burning psychological suspense, The Lanterns of Shizumori is an atmospheric descent into isolation, memory, and the fear of becoming part of a place that never intended to let you leave.
