Gary just wanted a quiet curry and trousers that didn't emotionally undermine him. Instead, in the fourth Hungry Table story, Mr Sharma hands him five black chillies— chillies that absorb light, judge your life choices, and come with three rules Gary forgets before he's left the shop. Within hours, he's triggered a hidden "sentinel" chilli, watching it slam into the smoke alarm with the precision of a brain surgeon and the aggression of a pigeon that's declared war on humanity.
Now The Harp pub is awake. The table spells insults. The jukebox coughs out Adele like a Victorian orphan trapped in a speaker. The beer mats rearrange into shapes that violate council bylaws. Every chilli eaten brings weaponised regret.
George apologises to his pint, sincerely, like a man who knows he's been the problem in that relationship.
Brian remembers everything— including that his first email password was password123, followed by the even more catastrophic letmein, used as his bank login. He regrets this with the intensity of a man who once defrosted a chicken on his keys using the grill setting, melting them into a poultry-flavoured key-lasagne, and decided that was "fine."
Jim goes emotionally sincere against his will and remembers approving the bypass that bulldozed Mrs Henderson's garden, including her beloved gnome, Mr Giggles. He regrets this like a man who knows he personally ended a gnome's career, marriage, and pension.
Gary finally admits the truth: Sebastian, the sarcastic voice narrating his failures, isn't a ghost or a supernatural hitchhiker. He's Gary's alter ego— a one-man commentary track living rent-free in his head, critiquing his trousers, his curry choices, and his soul.
With two chillies left, the pub is humming, the ghosts are restless, and Gary's beige trousers are losing the will to continue.
Five chillies. Five regrets. One man, one pub, one alter ego named Sebastian. And absolutely no hope.
