このコンテンツについて

Lois Lowry’s The Giver is the quintessential dystopian novel, followed by its remarkable companions, Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son.

Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear of pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the community. When Jonas turns 12 he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now, it is time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.©1993 Lois Lowry; (P)1993 Random House, Inc., Listening Library, An Imprint Of Random House Audio Publishing Group

Good narration, maybe better if you play it slower. Occasional piano melodies really suit each scene. It’s rare to have music during the book, but this one really has meanings to the music and you will see that towards the end.

The story starts with an unusual daily life of a “dystopia”, but the residents seem to be happily living their lives. As you read along, you see that they are not aware of what they are deprived of. For instance, color and feelings - especially love.

The people in the Community don’t need to feel any sadness or excruciating pain. The Receiver (and the Giver) are the only ones with access to such perspective, and hence they are honored for the wisdom that comes with them.

Really makes you realize that wisdom and true happiness cannot exist without pain.

The ending I hear has many debates to the interpretation. Well I think it’s a happy ending in a sense... I do would like to believe what comes after that leads to a happier life like what we have today....

Wisdom and happiness come from pain
