There he met Norah, a Venezuelan student studying social anthropology who would later become his wife. Their relationship soon brought them back to Venezuela, where a chance encounter with a then little-known Minister of Mines set in motion a remarkable chain of events. Before long, Dr. Hassan was drawn into the conversations that helped shape OPEC and later into the royal court of Qatar, where he helped guide a rapidly changing nation through the opportunities created by its growing oil wealth. Together, Mostafa and Norah built a life across countries, cultures, and continents - and eventually a considerable fortune. Decades later, an encounter with one of Venezuela’s wealthy families would draw Dr. Hassan back to the country where so much of his remarkable journey had begun. But Venezuela had changed. Hugo Chávez was rising to power, businesses and fortunes were becoming vulnerable, and the political upheaval that followed would threaten much of what he had spent a lifetime building.
