‘You want to risk everything – for a country that’s never cared if you live or die?’

1941: In a segregated Florida town, three young Black men enlist to fight for a freedom they’ve never known at home.

Before they leave, Cora marries in haste to secure her future – but her heart remains divided between the man she wed and the man she truly loves.

1945: As war finally ends, everything shifts. The boys Cora knew return as men she barely recognises, carrying scars no one can see – and truths that threaten to unravel everything Cora has fought to hold together.

Set against the backdrop of war where Black men and women weren’t allowed to be heroes, comes a powerful, deeply moving novel about love, sacrifice and the epic resilience of the human spirit.

Gripping, heart-wrenching and so beautifully written. The Colour of Home will stay with me for a long time.
Compelling story telling, engaging and at times challenging, but ultimately The Colour of Home is a wonderful story of hope. I loved it.
Astonishingly good - if you read one book in 2026 make it this one.
Tammye Huf’s searing post-World War II-era novel is a fast-paced, heart-wrenching look at the tragic conundrum of racial identity in the United States, which defined the American experience of that time, and which continues to reverberate in the America of today. The Colour of Home provides a mirror from which readers will not be able to turn away.
I absolutely adored this book – Tammye Huf's ability to weave historical detail about a segregated Florida and the experiences of black WWII veterans into a story of love and social justice was excellent. She did it with the lightest of touches that packed an absolute punch – informative, compelling and ultimately uplifting
Drawing on her own family’s history...Huf’s sympathetic, well-defined characters struggle with anger and frustration, desire and longing—and the betrayal of American democracy. An intimate look at the nation’s racist history
Huf delivers a powerful story…The heart of the novel lies in its depiction of inequality among WWII veterans and the danger in fighting it. This will move readers
Inspired by the author’s own family history, this compelling and layered narrative will appeal to book clubs, readers of WWII fiction, and Brit Bennett’s The Vanishing Half
A powerful tale of family, faith and sacrifice
