Mike Gatting’s England side departed for Australia under a cloud of criticism after a dismal home summer, having lost Test series to both New Zealand and India. They were completely written off, but what followed was one of the greatest turnarounds in cricket history. England didn’t just compete – they dominated.
England went to to win the Ashes, the Perth Challenge and the World Series Cup. At the centre of their success stood Chris Broad, the hero of the tour. Broad struck centuries in Tests at Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne, finishing the series with 487 runs at 69.57, alongside 559 more in 14 one-day internationals.
Drawing on his personal tour diary, Broad offers a vivid, behind-the-scenes glimpse of a team at its peak. Featuring a rich cast of characters – including David Gower, Ian Botham, Allan Lamb, and Mike Gatting – alongside cameo appearances from Phil Collins, George Michael and Sir Elton John (who DJ’d the victory party), this is a vibrant retelling of a golden moment in English cricket history.
