あらすじ・解説
In his final hours in the Oval Office, the outgoing President grants a controversial last-minute pardon to Joel Backman, a notorious Washington power broker who has spent the last six years hidden away in a federal prison. What no one knows is that the President issues the pardon only after receiving enormous pressure from the CIA. It seems Backman, in his power broker heyday, may have obtained secrets that compromise the world’s most sophisticated satellite surveillance system.
Backman is quietly smuggled out of the country in a military cargo plane, given a new name, a new identity, and a new home in Italy. Eventually, after he has settled into his new life, the CIA will leak his whereabouts to the Israelis, the Russians, the Chinese, and the Saudis. Then the CIA will do what it does best: sit back and watch. The question is not whether Backman will survive—there is no chance of that. The question the CIA needs answered is, who will kill him?

ナレーターが素晴らしい！
既に読んでいてストーリーは分かっているのですが文字だけでは、ピンとこなかったイタリア語の発音やイタリアアクセントの英語の使い分けに感動しました。イタリアアクセントの強い、弱い、抑揚の少ない英語、声音の違いは元よりそれだけでも瞬時にキャラクターが知れて母語でない言語での「ながら聴き」でも迷子にならずに楽しめました。それにイヤミやジョークも文字からよりもはっきりと伝わり所々でクスリとなりましたし、本当に引き込まれますね。オーディオブックって、ちょっとお高いし文字を読むのが好きな私には必要ないかなと思っていましたが、そんな先入観は完全に吹き飛ばしましたよ。でもナレーター次第だとは感じます。実は最初に聴いたタイトルは合わなくて返品してしまいました。だからいっそう今回のナレーターには感謝です。イタリアの街並みを歩いているような気になりました、が、イタリアの人って何であんなにちょくちょくコーヒーブレイクするんでしょ。ライトなアメリカン派だった私がヘビーなエスプレッソを飲むようになって周りが驚いてます。それにたっぷりのランチやディナー、作者と違ってその地に行ってもないのに体重が増えそうですよ。
