Mama and the cubs take a trip to get some farm–fresh eggs, but they end up getting a farm–fresh pup!

At Farmer Ben’s barn, Queenie has a box full of puppies, and Sister falls in love with the little one playing with a piece of straw. Mama reminds the cubs that a pup is plenty of work, but the lively pup licks Mama’s nose until her heart melts.

Now Brother and Sister have to learn to take care of Little Lady, the newest addition to the family. The cubs promise to watch their new pet every second, but Little Lady soon leaves puddles on the floor. She gets into Mama’s baking flour, tangles up Papa’s fishing tackle, and even makes a mess of the fresh eggs.

The Berenstain Bears’ New Pup is a Level One I Can Read book, which means it’s perfect for children learning to sound out words and sentences.

• Getting a Dog: Brother spots the "PUPS FOR SALE!" sign posted right on the barn door, sparking the cubs’ immediate campaign to adopt Queenie’s pup.
• Pet Responsibility: Mama explains that owning a dog requires constant cleanup, and Little Lady proves it by leaving a calling card in the corner.
• Funny Books for Kids: Papa Bear excitedly welcomes a dozen farm eggs, having no idea that the cubs are bringing home a bundle of puppy mischief instead.
• Dog Lovers: On the ride home, the cubs name their new pet Little Lady because she is tiny and Farmer Ben confirmed she is a girl.
