あらすじ・解説

Lord Nathaniel Harte, the disagreeable duke of Beswick, spends his days smashing porcelain, antagonizing his servants, and snarling at anyone who gets too close. With a ruined face like his, it's hard to like much about the world - especially smart-mouthed harpies (with lips better suited to kissing than speaking) who brave his castle with indecent proposals.

But Lady Astrid Everleigh will stop at nothing to see her younger sister safe from a notorious scoundrel, even if it means offering herself up on a silver platter to the forbidding Beast of Beswick himself. And by offer, she means what no highborn lady of sound and sensible mind would ever dream of - a tender of marriage with her as his bride.

Pretty enjoyable Regency romance

So I’m going to start with my issues with this book:
(1) the whiplash, Thane went back and forth between giving the romance a chance only to push his wife away time and again. On the one hand I loved that she didn’t give up, on the other, women who allow men to shit on them time and again kinda piss me off too: fool me twice sort of thing. I suspect that this back and forth was for more smecks on the page… I really dislike sacrificing story just for smecks, it should be organic and fit in the story, not fitting the story around the smecks.
(2) number 1 would not have been as big a deal with some better characterization and more showing than telling. We are told a lot about how damaged Thane is but don’t see it: we don’t get flashbacks of his injuries, residual pain, PTSD, rejection from ladies after his injuries. I think if we had gotten more of that it would have helped the story. Like for example: WHY didn’t he want kids? I literally have NO idea!
All that being said, and in spite of my suspicions about the term “patriarchy” being bandied about in Regency England, I did enjoy the book, it had a good pace and i was interested in the resolution. I loved the heroine for the most part and it had a good premise. The epilogue was lovely and satisfying.

Villain

So, I enjoyed the story. It was a basic historical romance with a strong heroine. I was entertained for the most part. I was disappointed with the non villainous villain.

I absolutely loved this audiobook.

I absolutely loved this audiobook...more than just a historical romance it deals with a hero who isn't the most handsome but his good heart shows through... I rather picture him as ruggedly good looking! I definitely recommend this listen... the many obstacles they had to overcome... wonderful!

It was a solid okay

I really liked the premise and the start of this book, but the scarred aristocrat/duke who can't be loved because he's so hideous, has been done a few times already and by the last 3rd I was a little bored with this one. Plus it just got a little cheesier than I liked.
The narrator did a pretty good job too.

Adore! ❤️

The best beauty and the beast retelling I’ve ever read! Delicious heat, strong heroine, brooding hero, all mixed into a brilliant love story that made my heart swoon!

Extremely interesting

I don’t normally listen/read historicals, but this one sounded intriguing and it was. The characters were great, even the Aunt and servants. It has some humorous moments, a war hero that had more to deal with than most, and a very sassy independent female. An excellent hot & sexy love story I would recommend to any romance reader. Great narration by Ms Nato.

Doesn't finish a scene without digress.

She interupts the flow too many times to repeat history or feelings. It was annoying

Beast of Beswick

The Beast of Beswick by Amalie Howard

Historical romance with the premise loosely taken from the fairytale. Everleigh Sisters series book 1.
Astrid goes to the Duke of Beswick with a proposal to save her sister from a scoundrel.
High society drama and manipulation ensue.

Astrid is quite vocal about the rights, or lack thereof, for women in the time period. She is strong and courageous and will do anything for her sister. Astrid is also clever and unlikely to take no for an answer without having a backup plan. I loved her cunning and fortitude. And her compassion and spunk.
And while the Duke wouldn’t want us to feel sorry for him, he’s really a hero. Both at heart and actuality. That his servants love and look out for him, is telling.

Charming and entertaining. Amusing and sensitive. And sexy too. I don’t read a lot of historical romance so was pleasantly surprised by the heroine progressive attitudes.

I alternated between the ebook and audio version. Nina Nato as the narrator did a good of of portraying emotions.

esta bien

I found this book to be just ok. I love imperfect heroes, but this hero was just mediocre.

Really enjoyed book....however

Loved this story line but not a massive fan of the narrator. Stuck with it as funny with lol moments and will prob listen again but could have been 5 stars with a better narrator

charming story ....

The story is charming ... even so the Duke seems to run around a lot of times /most the time, with an Erection ...

I personally wouldn't call it a regency novel ---- as the swearwords and the sex scenes (which are of no consequence) don't fit a Regency Novel --- it is a charming story nevertheless, which is beautifully read , a pleasant experience.

It had Potential.

The Hero "The Beast/The Beast of Beswick", a Drum-Roll I felt was appropriate each time it was said.
He suffers a continually arousal and wallows in self-pity and goes on and on about both.
The Author knows nothing about English villages, villagers and countryside, THEY know everyone's business. They also look after one of their own, he wouldn't have been the only seriously injured veteran, so all that horror rubbish was overplayed. The English in general are very good at being polite, so even in London, the extreme reactions of the TON was fanciful and over the top.
I felt the Author kept going down "rabbit holes" and then been forced to find ridiculous solutions.
The Heroine and sister escape danger and disappear into a neighbouring estate, with no one seeing where they have gone. They know Runners were looking for them, so they go into the Village and say"here we are".
The sister manages to go to London with the so called enemy, again with no-one being aware of her plans. She then changes character and is no longer the weak, pathetic woman, but becomes her own mistress, so the Heroine's help, is unwanted.
The only really decent character is the Aunt, though her exploits are far-fetched.
The final solution is unbelievable and well stretched out, but in par with the rest of the story.
The narrator did a very good job, with unbelievable rubbish.

Fantastic, steamy, feminist Regency read

I could not stop reading/listening to this fabulous story! Such a strong, feministic heroine and fabulously tormented hero. this was the regency romance I never knew I was missing. The characters are wonderful, likeable and laugh-out-loud funny. A saucy mix of long lusty looks and actual physical intimacy, this isn't one for the light romance readers. The narrator is a bit Judy Dench-like in my opinion, which works brilliantly. Can't wait to read more by this author!
