In this groundbreaking history of the modern American metropolis, Richard Rothstein explodes the myth that America's cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation - that is, through individual prejudices, income differences, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather, he incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation - the laws and policy decisions passed by local, state, and federal governments - that actually promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day.

Beyond race or class, our lives are defined by a powerful, unspoken system of divisions. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson gives an astounding portrait of this hidden phenomenon. Linking America, India and Nazi Germany, Wilkerson reveals how our world has been shaped by caste - and how its rigid, arbitrary hierarchies still divide us today. With clear-sighted rigour, Wilkerson unearths the eight pillars that connect caste systems across civilisations and demonstrates how our own era of intensifying conflict and upheaval has arisen as a consequence of caste.

Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. Her quest for knowledge transformed her.

The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the 20th century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.

あらすじ・解説
One of Time’s 10 most important nonfiction books of the 20th century.
Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne.
In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.
The Autobiography of Malcolm X stands as the definitive statement of a movement and a man whose work was never completed but whose message is timeless. It is essential for anyone who wants to understand the African American experience and America as a whole.

Sadly this was written in 1964...
We did not listen then and we are not really listening now. Too many foxes and not enough wolves in powerful positions. You will have to listen/read the book to understand my comment. Malcolm X is insightful, articulate and self aware; Alex Haley is a skillful writer; and Laurence Fishburne’s narration is excellent.

it's Nearly perfect
one of my favorite books of all time.. only problem is that the preface is missing.... I think Laurence Fishburne did a great Job channelling Malcolm... only person that might have done better is Denzel in the 90s... only reason I'm not giving it 5stars is because it's missing a Preface... (Alex Haley's part about meeting Malcom X) and the Epilogue..(the Death of Malcolm X and the events leading up too)... Those parts are equally important to me and I remember them from the physical copy..

I’ve been looking forward to this production since it was announced and Laurence Fishburne really delivered. Far and away the best audiobook I’ve purchased this year. The book is great in its own right so I don’t think I can add any praise that hasn’t already been given to the text. I’m already about half way through this one and I’ll probably repeat it a couple more times in the coming weeks. Fishburne is THAT good.

I am a better man
I am a better man for having listened to this book. I never knew that Malcolm X had left a autobiography however, I remember that time period. I was young then, I dealt with a lot of racism and one of the things that I remembered was white associates would try to force me to tell them was I for Malcolm X or was I for Martin Luther King. They would tell me Malcolm X is a Bad ni@#er and Martin Luther king was a good one. **( Note how they used the N word and did not think it was offensive). I never bought into any of that and never gave my opinion as you would loose either way. I just wanted to see both of them force this country into new Direction. Today's young men and women who don't remember the struggle of the 1960s they don't remember very much except in history books. But to see white America finally catch on that the systematic racism is deeply ingrained (BLM George Floyd). The Autobiography of Malcolm X shows how far we have come and where we are today. Really loved Chapter 15

Fascinating
I had a jumble of emotions whilst listening to this book, from incredulity, irritation, deep sadness and amusement at situations Mr X found himself and his sardonic humour. I nearly gave up on this a couple of times as the honesty was at times difficult. But this book is about Malcom X's journey warts and all. The final chapters explain his journey and the conclusions he came to based on close observation of his fellow man in a variety of situations. A book I've always wanted to read and I'm so glad I did.

Book surprisingly goes into great detail of what it was like in black ghetto's of the 1940's America. Then it expands further and looks more broadly at the civil rights movement, in an American and International context. A incredible story well told that is thought provoking. Also the voice acting is spot on.

Powerful, timely performance of a classic
I first read 'The Autobiography of Malcolm X' as a young person years ago. I learned so much from the extraordinary life and contribution of Malcolm X in the modern world. Listening to this audiobook some twenty years later is a timely reminder of that work, with layers and lessons for every kind of audience. Fishburne delivers a moving, emotional narrative that I imagine Malcolm would have been very proud of. Thank you for this work. In a world of increasing divisiveness and misunderstanding, it is a light for us. I hope it benefits many hearts and communities around the planet.

The most influential leader of the 20th century America
One of my favourite people of all time. No offence to the narrator but after watching Denzel Washington play Malcolm X so brilliantly (still can’t understand not awarding him the Oscar) I wish he would have been the narrator of this brilliant autobiography.
