"Incredible individual, incredible book, incredible story." (Chris Hemsworth)

"A hero who is as humble as he is resilient...testament to a 'never give up' spirit!" (Bear Grylls)

"From reading this book, the message that comes shining through is this: you can achieve anything." (Ant Middleton)

あらすじ・解説

Best-selling author and award-winning adventurer Ross Edgley has been studying the art of resilience for years, applying all he has learned to become the first person in history to swim all the way round Great Britain, breaking multiple world records along the way. Now, Ross turns his attention to mental strength and Stoicism.

Ross Edgley famously ran a marathon pulling a 1.4-tonne car and climbed a rope the height of Everest (8,848 m), after living with Yamabushi warrior monks in Japan and partaking in Shamanic pain rituals with fire ants in the Amazon jungle. On his epic 1,780-mile journey around Great Britain, which lasted 157 days, Ross swam through giant jellyfish, arctic storms, ‘haunted’ whirlpools and polluted shipping lanes, going so hard, and so fast, his tongue fell apart.

Ross’ previous book, The World’s Fittest Book, was a Sunday Times number one best seller and explored the science of physical fitness. Now, in The Art of Resilience, Ross uses his swim experience and other amazing endurance feats, where he managed to overcome seemingly insurmountable pain, hardship and adversity, to study the performance of extreme athletes, military and fitness specialists and psychologists to uncover the secrets of mental fitness and explore the concept of resilience, persistence, valour and a disciplined mind-set in overcoming adversity. This groundbreaking work represents a paradigm shift in what we thought the human body and mind were capable of and will give you a blueprint to become a tougher, more resilient and ultimately better human - whatever the challenge you face.

A pleasure to listen to

I remember hearing of Ross’s journey on social media when the swim was taking place. When he told his story on The Joe Rogan experience following the swim, I was fascinated by his tale and his enthusiasm. As a man who swam competitively for more than a decade, it’s not the swim that kept me entertained (although it certainly did impress me beyond words), it was Ross’s puppy-like enthusiasm and tenacity at which he completed his journey. Deeply philosophical and intelligent in his approach, Ross and his crew’s personal journey follows in the footsteps of so many heroes and brave-souled adventurers and is a testament of human will. Truly one of the best physical and mental achievements I have ever had the pleasure of hearing.

Great writer and narrator

Loved it, would highly recommend! Small section roughly in the middle goes a little too much into details and drags on a little too long about swimming technique, but otherwise a great read!

a motivational story, and an informative how to.

the detailed story of how Ross became who he is makes you feel that swimming around great Britain is achievable through stoic sports science.

Incredible life story with unimaginable teachings

Remarkable journey through Ross was impeccably written, spoken, and most importantly lived. I personally was inspired by the experience he faced and overcame through the lessons taught in an intangible way. Best Book read of 2020!!!

Outstanding

Never have I consumed a book such an uplifting book that made me gasp, shout, cringe and cry like this book. The astonishing accomplishment by Ross Edgley and his team are utterly amazing. The writing and story telling by Ross himself made me feel as if I were there in the water and on the boat living it with them. Congratulations and thank you!

A great way to get FIRED UP!

I loved his stories from his mental and physical toughness to his ability to push through anything in his way. He explains the importance of an amazing crew and the importance of hard work. Also within this book is a lot of scientifically backed up knowledge about resilience. As well as funny stories about his AMAZING adventure. Must read/listen.

ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT

Wasn't sure what to expect from this but this book is so informative on what the body mind and soul is actually capable of when it comes to endurance sports. It's also amazingly entertaining and you'll find yourself laughing, shaking your head in disbelief and a whole mix of other emotions along the way.

Great Story, Inspiring Achievement, Fantastic Guy

At first, I thought the book was going to be a long, drawn out and repetitive story for the purposes of there being a book. HOWEVER, the mix between Ross's personal accounts and existing scientific studies was very thought provoking. The fact that he achieved what he did in the first place should automatically earn him 5 stars, however the kindness of his personality and character shows through his narration and I can't imagine the book would be half as personal if not narrated by the man himself.

Funny and inspiring book

I like Ross he's the human version of a Golden Retrieve. I've seen him on youtube and found his bubbly personality funny so I gave his book a try and I was not disappointed. I found this book inspiring because Ross is not motivated by some dark past like many other exceptional people. He is just a normal guy with a loving family that wants to push his limits.

Great Achievement but Lacking

Good story of how Ross swam around the UK and some of the factors and considerations that went with it. I commend him on being able to do that and no doubt resilience would of been at play, but for a book titled The Art of Resilience I would of liked less content on his diet and training and more on resilience. Was a bit of a struggle to finnish.

some very interesting and enlightening learnings from this book. listening about Ross and his internal monologue training too his ridiculous amount of food and how he had to fit it in, has really shown how far someone dedicated and prepared can take their body

Great inspiration and information!

I loved listening to this read in the author’s own voice. The stories were great, structure was easy to follow, research and tips were fascinating, and inspiration was real. Now I want to plan my own adventure and cycle around Australia!

Utterly brilliant

Ross is one of my favourite authors and hearing how read his own story is just magic. A brilliant storyteller who is modest and smiles through the outstanding efforts and struggles. A fantastic mixture of science and storytelling, this book is the only thing that tempts me out of bed and into my car driving a half hour to and from work each day, Ross has been a greatly appreciated driving companion
