SULUAN is a poetic survival drama and coming-of-age story infused with spiritual realism and grace, set against the lush islands of the Philippines in 1937. Recently awarded the CHRISTLIT BOOK AWARD, SULUAN tells the true tale of Antonia who was born and raised on Suluan—the furthest Philippine island in the eastern Pacific waters. In the summer of 1937, 15-year old Antonia sailed with fourteen young friends to Guiuan, Samar for an upcoming wedding.

After sailing 11/2 hours, an unexpected catastrophic storm leaves the sailboat torn to shreds. Antonia embarks on a harrowing journey of survival that redefines grief, belief, and belonging. Fighting the blazing sun by day and the cold darkness of night, she faces fear of the unknown waters beneath her. Near death after 13 agonizing days at sea, hungry sharks appear and surround Antonia. Out of nowhere, a miracle appears from the deep and becomes the answer to her cry. Antonia lands on the distant shore of Dinagat Island. A family takes Antonia into their home and hearts. But being rescued is not the same as being healed.

SULUAN is not a story about a girl who is magically spared all suffering. It is a story about a girl who survives suffering, and discovers that God can still be present in the midst of it. Her faith does not erase grief, it gives her the courage to walk through it.

Lueckhof's historical fiction account of Antonia's heroic journey is based on much historical research, many interviews with Jhun Sayson, several trips to the island of Suluan, and from her 40+ years of personal work and involvement with the Filipino people and their culture. As an observant "foreigner" from the suburbs of Chicago, (one who loves to tell stories!) it has been her life goal and privilege to bring awareness and honor to this beautiful yet complex country and her people.
