あらすじ・解説

A collection of four chilling novels, ingeniously wrought gems of terror from the brilliantly imaginative number one New York Times best-selling author of The Fireman, Joe Hill.

"One of America's finest horror writers" (Time magazine), Joe Hill has been hailed among legendary talents such as Peter Straub, Neil Gaiman, and Jonathan Lethem. In Strange Weather, this "compelling chronicler of human nature's continual war between good and evil" (Providence Journal-Bulletin), who "pushes genre conventions to new extremes" (New York Times Book Review), deftly expose the darkness that lies just beneath the surface of everyday life.

Snapshot, performed by Wil Wheaton, is the disturbing story of a Silicon Valley adolescent who finds himself threatened by The Phoenician, a tattooed thug who possesses a Polaroid Instant Camera that erases memories snap by snap.

A young man takes to the skies to experience his first parachute jump...and winds up a castaway on an impossibly solid cloud, a Prospero's island of roiling vapor that seems animated by a mind of its own in Aloft, performed by Dennis Boutsikaris.

On a seemingly ordinary day in Boulder, Colorado, the clouds open up in a downpour of nails - splinters of bright crystal that shred the skin of anyone not safely under cover. Rain, performed by Kate Mulgrew, explores this escalating apocalyptic event as the deluge of nails spreads out across the country and around the world.

In Loaded, performed by Stephen Lang, a mall security guard in a coastal Florida town courageously stops a mass shooting and becomes a hero to the modern gun rights movement. But under the glare of the spotlights, his story begins to unravel, taking his sanity with it. When an out-of-control summer blaze approaches the town, he will reach for the gun again and embark on one last day of reckoning.

With an afterword from Joe Hill, read by the author.

Masterfully exploring classic literary themes through the prism of the supernatural, Strange Weather is a stellar collection from an artist who is "quite simply the best horror writer of our generation" (Michael Kortya).

All Sizzle No Steak

All four stories begin well, with great concepts, brilliant even. And then, sadly, they crash and burn at the end. A great idea, with a flat tire ending feels like a mugging, a bait and switch. It may be a family trait -- remember the absurd ending of Under the Dome? Hundreds of pages of build-up, tension, brilliance -- and then a dumb dumb dumb ending. The readers did a great job with what they had to work with. But in the end, I was deflated.

Disappointed

I was really hoping for big things from these but overall it fell short. The first book was great and I really enjoyed it. Then they got worse from there. The second was good but the third and fourth just missed the mark for me. I couldn’t wait for them to get over so I could start a new book. I think this is the only case that I can say that the movie would be better than the book.

Disappointed

Didn’t finish. It’s no Heart Shaped Box... I can do without specific references to bodily needs, wants, functions. An amazing story doesn’t need that info.

Only one decent story

Other than the first story this is a terrible book. Full of personal political views and not much else. This collection seems like throw away ideas he couldn't make into novels.

Could not even finish it was so bad

What would have made Strange Weather better?

I have no idea, maybe not to have been written at all

Has Strange Weather turned you off from other books in this genre?

Not the genre

How did the narrator detract from the book?

slow-flat reading, no emotions.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Strange Weather?

all of them

Any additional comments?

I found myself wandering off throughout the entire book and had to keep going back.

Disappointing

It was collection of 3 stories. First one was alright but rest were pretty bad. Or rather they were alright but definitely different genre than expected.

Why?

Why do Joe Hill and his father feel the need to include their political views in their books now?! Sure they’re entitled to their own opinions, but it’s pretty shitty to alienate and offend half of your fans.
I liked Snapshot and Aloft, so a star for each. Loaded was garbage. Rain would have been alright if the politics had been left out. Also, I’m born and raised in Colorado and natives do not have a southern accent. I like Kate Mulgrew, but the accents were terrible.

Meh

I’m hot and cold on Joe Hill’s work. Sometimes I love em, sometimes they’re just too bizarre.

In this collection, Snapshot was well conceived and well done. Phonecian was also pretty good.

But then along came Aloft, and I felt like I was in a cloud of the author’s drunken or drug addled LSD trip..

Then Rain... too iffy, I couldn’t bring myself to finish it...meh

Boring, full of liberal agenda

Honestly, I tried to get into the stories. I really wanted to like them. They were just bland. Add on the unabashed liberal agenda that was pushed and it just wasn’t good. Not even kind of.

Too many politics not enough story.

I typically like Joe Hill's work and I cannot complain about the performances. Since he picked some of my favorite readers. But I feel this series of novellas was way to focused on political climates and the authors political beliefs, than the stories he was attempting to bring to life. I guess I actually need to read descriptions for his work now.
