'Stories to Entertain You… While Waiting For a Plumber' is the third book of short stories by Pat Muir. It contains 26 diverse short stories, which include three of length:
- 'Locked In' describes an immobilized man whose caregiver is his wife's murderer,
- 'Infertility' describes the difficulties a couple experiences in starting a family, and
- 'A Little Noise Won't Hurt You' describes how a student helps her professor to make an acoustic gun and its consequences.
Stories of love in the book include 'Have I been Lucky,' 'The Mahjong Man,' and 'A Bride For Bernard.'
Tragedy is found in 'Brahms is Singing to Me,' 'Jimmy You Whisper,' and 'The Accident.'
The longest story is a novella of 16000 words, which was adapted from an unproduced movie script of the same name – 'The Ski Trip of Terror.' It describes the fortunes of a ski party who encounter rednecks on their trip, a trip in which only the women prevail.
Surprise occurs in 'Fatherhood,' 'The Twins,' and 'Wives.' Two stories are set in the 1850s and 1870s in the USA and England, respectively, the latter being in the era of English writer Thomas Hardy.
The final story, 'Father McArdle on Sunday,' set in the 1930s in the US, is concerned with a butcher who accidentally kills his wife.
