Dame Hester Quill, a formidable retired codebreaker with a bad hip and a better memory, enlists Tom as her legs and ears. Between them they have a bell-pull log, a rota of hot-water cans, a lock that turns once or twice, a singing kettle, a drift of snow, and one long night to work out who did it, and how. Every clue is laid out in plain sight, if you listen closely.
