When young heiress Vivian Seymour is found shot to death, corporate attorney Gail Brevard, who's never before handled a criminal matter, is suddenly assigned the case by the partners in her firm. The murder weapon belonged to his father - he admits to having it on his person during the evening in question. He was found by the police in front of the murdered girl's mansion. But he claims to have spent most of the night with another woman, whose name he refuses to give, and there's no hard evidence tying him to the crime - and no motive. The situation seems impossible: the judge continually rules against her, and Gail can't seem to make any headway against the suave and determined prosecutor. She now believes Damon to be innocent.
