批評家のレビュー

“DJ Palmer captivates readers with the fine line between a mother on a mission and a mother who’s gone way too far. With a young girl’s life hanging in the balance, the stakes couldn’t be higher in this pulse-pounding winner of a thriller.” (Lisa Gardner, number one New York Times best-selling author)

“Mother doesn’t always know best in this thrill ride of a novel. Palmer expertly weaves together a story of family skeletons, a teenage girl’s medical crisis - and the mother of all questions at the crux of it - what’s real and what’s imagined? Gripping and twisted.” (Karin Slaughter, number-one New York Times best-selling author)

あらすじ・解説

Saving Meghan is a riveting new thriller full of secrets and lies from author D.J. Palmer.

Can you love someone to death?

Some would say Becky Gerard is a devoted mother and would do anything for her only child. Others, including her husband, Carl, claim she's obsessed and can't stop the vicious circle of finding a cure at her daughter's expense.

Fifteen-year-old Meghan has been in and out of hospitals with a plague of unexplained illnesses. But when the ailments take a sharp turn, clashing medical opinions begin to raise questions about the puzzling nature of Meghan’s illness. Doctors suspect Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a rare behavioral disorder where the primary caretaker seeks medical help for made-up symptoms of a child. Is this what's going on? Or is there something even more sinister at hand?

As the Gerards grow more and more suspicious of each other and their medical team, Becky must race against time to prove her daughter has a deadly disease. But first, she must confront her darkest fears and family secrets that threaten to not only upend her once-ordered life...but to destroy it.

Praise for Saving Meghan:

"Plenty of twists...will keep you turning the pages as you guess...and guess again." (Lisa Scottoline, New York Times best-selling author of After Anna)

"An acute, sensitive portrayal of family love under extreme stress...[with] a touch of Hitchcock." (William Landay, New York Times best-selling author of Defending Jacob)

"Smart and taut.... Moves at a lightning pace." (Alafair Burke, New York Times best-selling author of The Wife)

worth it in the end

This was one of those books where you need to be patient (pun intended) the last half of this book had me feeling like I needed to be in the ward I didn't know who was lying and who was telling the truth. I will still put this on my unreliable narrator list because you just don't know and you feel like everyone is lying.

I don't want to give anything away because the unfolding is the book.

The narration by Mary Stuart Masterson and Rebecca Soler was very well done.

It took awhile but I know understand all the hype around this book, it is a slow start but well worth it in the end!

Predictable

Was able to figure a reasonably accurate version of plot in the early part of the book. Plot could have been shorter. Loved the medical focus and information around.

Great Read!

I usually read a lot of historical fiction, so this was different from what I'm used to. I got through it pretty fast, really wanting to see what happened at the end. There were a lot of plot twists, and I was surprised to see what eventually happened. I found myself trying to figure it out, but not really sure what would happen. He wraps up everything nicely. Very entertaining and enjoyable read that keeps you thinking right up until the end! This would make a great movie!

Written for TV

Entertaining story but very predictable and very much written with TV/movie rights in mind.

Overall entertaining for a long car ride but also not great.

Unexpected

Didn’t even know what I was getting myself into too but I enjoyed it. A little unbelievable but was a nice kind of medical thriller

Okay

Most of the book was not bad, though it dragged at times, but the suspenseful climax (not) was ridiculous, and the villain and motive absolutely absurd. Read the first 3/4 and then write your own ending-it will be better.

Unlike any other!!

Just wow! I could not stop listening! this is maybe the 2nd or 3rd book I've listened to straight thru. And this is a long book! I can say that I honestly didn't see the ending twist at all. Not at all. This is the 2nd book by this author that I listened to, and I've already pre-ordered the third. I cannot wait.

Slow read

The story was very slow. It grasped my interest at the beginning, then waned. It was somewhat unbelievable. I did read it to the end to find out the conclusion. That narration was also somewhat somewhat monotonous.

Interesting Read...

I enjoyed this book for the most part, however as much as I love Mary Stuart Masterson in films and TV... I was pretty bored with her interpretation of her characters and narration. I wanted to nod off in sleep.. not much inflection or dialogue changed from character to character. Leaving me unable to focus in some sections of the story line.

The story itself is semi predictable, but unsure of the motives behind the antagonists and the protaginists. Social issues were involved that could and do happen today.

Fantastic!!!

Can someone out there please explain the epilogue. I’m so confused. I’ve listened three times. I’ll be most grateful. Fondly, Sally 😄

Excellent narration.

I chose this audio book because I had heard Rebecca Soler narrate another series of books. Rebecca is joined by another good narrator here. The story is full of twists and turns from the start and the narrators carry the entire story along superbly. I highly recommend this audiobook and I’m off now to look for another story narrated by Rebecca Soler.
